Vanuatu passport renewal on expiry

Issuing a new Vanuatu passport when the old one expires: an adult's after 10 years, a child's after 5. It starts a few months before expiry, remotely, with no trip to the islands.

What Vanuatu passport renewal means

Vanuatu passport renewal means issuing a new passport on expiry: an adult's after 10 years, a child's after 5.

We start a few months ahead: countries of entry require spare validity, and the remote process takes longer. If a passport has expired, citizenship does not end - we issue a new one; after a long lapse we first confirm the status in the registers.

A child passport needs a separate application and a parent's consent. If a surname has changed, the Vanuatu registers are updated first, then the passport.

A simple example

After 5 years we reminded a family about renewing the children's passports and did both in one process.

05 / Key facts

Key facts

01Vanuatu passport validity

Adults 10 years, children 5 years

When the passport expires, the citizen applies for a new one. Children's passports are renewed twice as often and are easy to overlook.

02When to start renewal

Several months before expiry

Destination countries require spare validity, and the remote process takes time. Starting right before a trip is too late.

03Expired passport

Citizenship does not end

We arrange a new passport. If it expired long ago, we first confirm citizenship status in the Vanuatu registries.

04Name change and children

Registry first, then the passport

After a surname change, the Vanuatu registries are updated first. A child's passport is a separate application with a parent's consent.

Common mistakes

Starting renewal right before a trip

Start several months before expiry: destination countries require spare passport validity.

Forgetting that a child's passport is valid for 5 years

Note the date in advance: children's passports are renewed after 5 years. We remind the family and can renew all passports in one process.

Renewing the passport before the registry shows the new surname

Update the Vanuatu registries first, then apply for the passport. Otherwise the passport will not match the registry.
