02 / In plain words
What Vanuatu citizenship by birth means
If at least one parent was a Vanuatu citizen on the child's date of birth, the child is a citizen by birth. No investment is needed for them.
The child receives birth registration in Vanuatu, citizenship documents and a first passport. A birth certificate from another country is accepted with translation and legalisation.
A child born before the parents obtained citizenship does not become a citizen by birth: a separate basis is needed. If born during the checks, the child is added to the family application before the oath.
A simple example
A year after obtaining citizenship, a family had a daughter. We arranged her birth registration, citizenship documents and passport with no new investment.

05 / Key facts
Key facts
01Condition
At least one parent is a citizen on the birth date
What matters is the child's date of birth and the date on the parent's certificate. If the parent became a citizen before the child was born, the child is a Vanuatu citizen by birth.
02Investment for the child
None - no DSP contribution, no CIIP fund
No contribution or fund share is paid for such a child. The family only arranges the child's documents.
03Child's documents
Birth registration, citizenship papers, passport
A birth certificate from another country is accepted with a translation and legalisation. A Vanuatu child passport is valid for 5 years.
04Born during the check
Added to the family application before the oath
If a child is born while the family application is being processed, they are added to it before the oath. A child born before the parents' citizenship needs a separate basis.
Common mistakes
Treating a child born before the parents' citizenship as a citizen
Only a child born after the date of the parent's certificate is a citizen by birth. Older children need a separate basis, so discuss this before the family applies.
Paying a new investment for the child
No contribution is due for a child born to a Vanuatu citizen. You only arrange birth registration, citizenship papers and a passport.
Forgetting to legalise the birth certificate
A foreign birth certificate is accepted only with a translation and legalisation. Arrange both right after the birth, or the Vanuatu registration will be delayed.
