Children with permanent residence in Cyprus: up to 18 years old, dependents 18-25 and nuances of 2026

Contents
Cyprus permanent residence under the Regulation 6.2 program is a status for the whole family, and not just for the investor. Children under 18 years of age are included in the application automatically. Older children, up to 25 years old, can also enter - but as dependents and under clear conditions. We break it down by age: who passes, what income is needed, what documents to prepare and what happens to the child after 25 years old so that the EU resident status is not lost.
Family principle of permanent residence in Cyprus: who can you take with you
The main thing that distinguishes the Cyprus program Permanent residence for investment under Regulation 6.2 from many others - one investor covers the whole family with status at once. Real estate is purchased from €300,000 plus VAT (new building first sale directly from the developer for housing), income outside Cyprus is confirmed - and not only the applicant, but also his relatives receive lifelong EU resident status.
The family circle under Regulation 6.2 includes: the main applicant, his or her spouse and dependent children under 25 years of age. It is children who most often raise questions, because the rules depend on age. For some children, inclusion is almost a formality, for others it is a separate procedure with its own set of conditions and documents.
- Children under 18 years old - are included in the parents’ application automatically, without additional conditions.
- Children 18-25 years old - can enter as dependents, but only if three conditions are met (more on them below).
- Children over 25 years old - they no longer fit into the parent application, they need their own basis.
We have collected a detailed analysis of all family members in a separate material about inclusion of a family in permanent residence in Cyprus. Here the focus is on children - from newborns to adult students.
Children under 18 years of age: automatic activation
The simplest category. Minor children of the main applicant (relatives, as well as adopted children and children of the spouse from a previous marriage) are included in the parents’ application automatically - as dependent dependents. No certificates about the child’s studies, income or financial dependence are required: until the age of 18, dependence on parents is presumed by law.
A child under 18 years of age receives the same lifelong status as the parents. He does not need to live in Cyprus, learn the language or pass any exams - in principle, these requirements are not in the program, neither for adults nor for children. Maintaining the same status for the whole family: a visit to Cyprus at least once every two years.
An important nuance of age: the key point is the age of the child on the date of application. If the child is not yet 18 at the time of filing, he is treated as a minor, even if he turns 18 while the case is pending. Therefore, when a child approaches adulthood, we advise not to delay the application - this eliminates the need to later prove dependency and student status.
For each minor child, the family income requirement increases by 10,000 € per year. How exactly income is calculated and what is included in it, we look at the guide about Income requirement for permanent residence in Cyprus.
Children 18-25 years old: dependents under three conditions
After 18 years of age, the child is legally an adult, so automatic inclusion does not work. But the Regulation 6.2 program allows you to include an adult child under 25 years of age as a financially dependent dependent. To do this, three conditions must be simultaneously met.
- Financial dependence on a parent. The child does not have an independent basic income and is supported by the main applicant.
- Not married. A dependent can only be an unmarried son or an unmarried daughter. Creating your own family stops dependence on parents.
- Studying full-time. The child is 18-25 years old and must be a full-time student at a higher education institution - in Cyprus or abroad. Confirmed by a certificate from the university confirming full-time enrollment.
An adult child 18-25 years old submits a separate application and pays a separate fee - unlike young children who go on the same line as their parents. In this case, the parents (one or both jointly) must show an additional income of 10,000 € per year for each such child - in addition to the basic 50,000 € of the applicant and 15,000 € for the spouse.
The most valuable thing about this norm is that the child’s status is fixed forever. If a child 18-25 years old has received permanent residence as a dependent, his status remains valid even after he turns 25, gets married or ceases to be financially dependent on the parent. That is, once he has received lifelong EU resident status, he will no longer be taken away due to his age.
Table: child's age, inclusion condition and confirmation
To bring all the rules together, we have collected them in a table. It shows under what conditions a child of each age is included in the application and what documents confirm this.
| Child's age | Switching condition | How to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Under 18 years old | Automatically, as a minor dependent of the parents | Birth certificate with apostille |
| 18-25 years old | Financially dependent, single, full-time student at university | Certificate from the university confirming full-time study, confirmation of dependency, confirmation of marital status, income +10,000 € |
| Over 25 years old | Not included in the parent application - you need your own reason | Own investment / separate residence permit / student visa |
| Adopted child | On general terms according to your age | Court decision on adoption with apostille + birth certificate |
| Disabled child | Special case: lifelong dependence on parents | Medical certificate of disability and incapacity for work |
If you have a complex family configuration - children from different marriages, adopted children, a child with a disability - it makes sense to calculate in advance both the income and the package of documents for each. BRIDGES GLOBAL lawyers will break down your situation and tell you how to include as many loved ones as possible in one application without the risk of refusal.

What happens to a child after 25 years of age: dependent status is lost
The age of 25 is the limit after which a child ceases to be considered a dependent in the sense of the Regulation 6.2 program. It is important here not to confuse the two situations.
Situation one: the child has already received permanent residence as a dependent of 18-25 years old. Then there is nothing to worry about - his lifelong status remains with him forever, even when he turns 25, gets married or starts earning money on his own. This status will no longer be revoked from him. The only limitation: he will not be able to later apply his own spouse or his minor children to his status - they will need a separate basis.
Situation two: the child has already turned 25, but he does not yet have a status. This is where it cannot be included in the parent’s application - the age has been exceeded. Such an adult child needs his own basis for status in Cyprus:
- Your investment according to Regulation 6.2. An adult child himself buys real estate from €300,000 plus VAT (new building first sale for housing) and shows his income - receives his own lifelong permanent residence.
- Separate residence permit. For example, a worker or business residence permit, if the child is employed or runs a business in Cyprus.
- Student visa. If a child enters a Cypriot university, he is legalized as a student - this is a temporary status for the period of study.
Therefore, if there is a child in the family who is about to turn 25, we always recommend not delaying the application. Having time to register him as a dependent before his birthday means securing his lifelong EU resident status, which then does not depend on age, marriage, or earnings.
Newborns after parents obtain permanent residence
A frequent question: parents have already received permanent residence in Cyprus, and then a child is born into the family. What's wrong with him? The answer is simple and pleasant - such a child is added to the family status without any problems.
A child born after the parents have received a permanent residence permit is included in their status on a separate application. Since he is a minor and is obviously dependent on his parents, no additional conditions such as education or proof of dependency are required - it is enough to confirm the fact of birth and relationship.
What you will need for your new baby:
- child’s birth certificate with apostille and translation into English or Greek;
- application from parents to include the child in their status;
- confirmation that the family income covers an additional 10,000 € per year for a new child.
In practice, this means that you can plan a family calmly: the birth of children after moving does not jeopardize the status you have already obtained and does not require you to go through the investment procedure again. A new family member simply joins the already existing lifelong permanent residence of the parents.
Adopted children: under general conditions
Regulation 6.2 does not differentiate between natural and adopted children. An adopted child is included in the application under the same conditions as a native child - according to his actual age: up to 18 years old automatically, 18-25 years old as a dependent student.
The key point here is to prove the fact of adoption and that it was carried out legally. The Cypriot authorities carefully check the documents of children to exclude fictitious kinship for the sake of status. Therefore, the following is added to the standard package for a child:
- court decision (or other authorized act) on adoption with apostille and translation;
- child's birth certificate, reflecting the adoptive parents as parents, also with an apostille;
- if necessary, documents confirming that the adoption has entered into legal force and is not disputed.
If the adoption was formalized in another country, it is especially important that all acts are legalized according to the rules of the Hague Convention (apostille) and translated by a sworn translator. Any gap in the chain of adoption documents is a common reason for requests from the migration service and delays in the case. BRIDGES GLOBAL lawyers arrange this package in advance so that the inspector has no questions.
“More often than not, parents underestimate the time factor. The child's age is recorded as of the filing date - and if the son or daughter is about to turn 18 or 25, we try to file the case early, before the birthday. This is fundamental: a child 18-25 years old, once included in permanent residence as a dependent student, retains lifelong EU resident status forever - even when he grows up, gets married or starts earning money on his own. But someone who has already turned 25 without status cannot be included in the parental application, and he will have to look for his own basis. Separately, I ask you to pay attention to documents for children: apostille, fresh certificates within six months and consent of the second parent for minors - it is on these little things that applications most often stumble.”
Disabled child: a special case of lifelong dependence
A separate and humanly important situation is an adult child with a disability who is physically or mentally unable to provide for himself. For him, the standard logic of age limits does not work.
If an adult child, due to disability, is permanently dependent on his parents for life, he is considered not according to the usual rule of 18-25 years, but as a dependent dependent, regardless of age. That is, the requirement to be a student and meet the age of 25 does not apply to him - his dependence on his parents is not temporary, but permanent.
To take advantage of this norm, you need to document the nature and extent of the child’s disability:
- medical certificate of disability issued by the competent authority, with apostille and translation;
- documents confirming that the child is disabled and is fully supported by the parents;
- if available, a decision to establish guardianship or guardianship over an adult child.
The migration service considers each such case individually, so the wording of medical documents and their correct translation are critically important. This is precisely the situation where a well-assembled package directly determines the result: correctly executed documents allow the child to be assigned lifelong EU resident status on an equal basis with their parents.
Documents for children: what to prepare by age
Basic principle: the older the child, the more it is necessary to prove his dependence and status. Below is a general list. We keep a complete checklist for the entire family in a separate article about documents for permanent residence in Cyprus.
For any child (base):
- birth certificate with apostille and translation into English or Greek;
- a copy of the child's passport;
- photographs of the established sample;
- certificate of good conduct (for children over a certain age);
- health insurance and medical certificates.
Additionally for children 18-25 years old:
- certificate from the university about enrollment in full-time study (in Cyprus or abroad);
- confirmation of financial dependence from the main applicant;
- confirmation of marital status - that the child is not married;
- confirmation of the additional income of the parents of 10,000 € for this child.
When a child has only one applicant parent (divorce, child traveling with one of the parents), often required notarized consent of the second parent for departure and registration of the status of a minor child - also with an apostille and translation. If the second parent is deceased, deprived of rights or unknown, this is confirmed by relevant documents (death certificate, court decision).
Most civil documents must be issued within the last six months, otherwise the migration service will ask you to update the certificates. Therefore, the collection of documents for children should be synchronized with the submission, and not collected in advance.
Family income: +10,000 € per child
Children directly impact the financial requirement of the program. The basic income threshold outside Cyprus looks like this:
- 50 000 € per year - the main applicant;
- +15 000 € - husband or wife;
- +10 000 € - for each dependent child (both minors and students aged 18-25).
For example, a family of two parents and two children under 18 years of age must show a total annual income outside Cyprus of 50,000 + 15,000 + 10,000 + 10,000 = 85 000 €. If in the same family there is also a student aged 18-25, another 10,000 € is added - a total of 95,000 €.
Income must come from sources outside Cyprus and may consist of salary, pension, dividends, interest on deposits and rental income. For income from the United States, an IRS Form 1040-NR or K-1 with an apostille is prepared, for trading income, a consolidated audit report is prepared, and if the payment came from a foreign company account, beneficial ownership (UBO) is proven.
All details of the calculation, what exactly receipts are counted and how to confirm them, are discussed in the guide about Income requirement for permanent residence in Cyprus. The main thing to remember about children: each child in the application is an additional 10,000 € to the threshold, which must be actually confirmed.
Checking documents for children: where they are most often denied
Children are the part of the application where the Cyprus Migration Service checks especially carefully. In our experience, typical reasons for requests and delays specifically for children’s documents come down to several repeated errors.
- Expired certificates. Civil documents older than six months have to be redone - this automatically shifts the deadline.
- Missed apostille or incorrect translation. The birth certificate, adoption decision, medical report must be legalized and translated by a sworn translator.
- Weak proof of dependency for children 18-25 years old. One certificate from a university is not enough - you need to show financial dependence and unmarried status.
- No consent from the other parent. When registering a minor with one parent without the notarized consent of the second, the matter is often stalled.
If a case that has already been filed is stuck without progress, the resident status also has a retroactive effect: permanent residence removes bank blocks, and a case that has been stuck for months can be moved by a pre-trial claim (Legal Notice) addressed to the Minister of Internal Affairs. You should always check the current requirements and forms on the official portal - gov.cy and website Ministry of Internal Affairs of Cyprus.
Cyprus, EU and Schengen: what is important to know about children
Cyprus is a full member of the European Union, and permanent residence gives children the status of a permanent resident of an EU country. This is a serious advantage: the child grows up in the legal framework of the European Union, gets access to quality education and medicine, and lives peacefully on the island as long as he wants.
But there is a fact that we will say right away: Cyprus is not yet part of the Schengen zone. This means that permanent residence in Cyprus itself does not give the right to visa-free travel within Schengen - to travel to mainland Europe, children and parents still need a Schengen visa, like any residents of Cyprus. Cyprus is moving towards joining Schengen, but this has not yet happened for 2026.
But the Cypriot status itself for children is extremely stable. Let's remember the key:
- status life - neither the child nor the parents need to renew it;
- no requirements for language and residence - children are not required to learn Greek or live on the island permanently;
- enough to maintain status visit to Cyprus every two years - this is convenient for families where children study abroad.
If in the future you are considering not only permanent residence for your children, but also Cypriot citizenship, keep in mind: for a passport (unlike permanent residence) you will already need both residence and language knowledge at the B1 level. But this is a different story - for permanent EU resident status, neither one nor the other is required.
Family strategy: how not to miss children
When there are several children of different ages in a family, it is important to structure the presentation so that the maximum number of relatives is included in one status. Several working principles that we put into practice.
- Serve while kids are younger. If the child is soon to be 18 or 25, filing before his birthday means saving on evidence and securing his status forever. Age is calculated as of the date of submission.
- Secure the status of adult children now. Once acquired by a dependent of 18-25 years of age, the status remains with the child for life - even after 25, marriage and financial independence.
- For children over 25, plan your foundation. Either a separate investment, or a student/worker residence permit - so that the adult child also finds himself in the legal field of Cyprus.
- Count your income with a reserve. Each child is +10,000 € to the threshold. It is better to make sure in advance that the verified income covers all declared children.
The program is implemented through the purchase of real estate from €300,000 plus VAT - current objects and conditions for Cyprus permanent residence by investment We select individually according to the composition of the family. Frequently asked
Questions people ask before deciding
01Until what age does a child qualify for permanent residence in Cyprus?
Children under 18 years of age are included in the parents' application automatically. Children 18-25 years old can enter as dependents, provided that they are not married, are full-time students at a university and are financially dependent on the parent. After 25 years, a child cannot be included in the parental application - he needs his own basis.
02Do I need to prove anything for children under 18?
No, for minor children, dependence on their parents is presumed. A birth certificate with an apostille and translation is sufficient. Certificates about the child’s education or income are not needed - they are required only for children 18-25 years old.
03What are the conditions for including a child 18-25 years old?
Three conditions must be met simultaneously: the child is unmarried, is studying full-time at a higher education institution (in Cyprus or abroad) and is financially dependent on the main applicant. Such a child submits a separate application, and the parents show an additional income of 10,000 € per year for him.
04How much income do you need for each child?
For each dependent child - both a minor and a student aged 18-25 - the income requirement outside Cyprus increases by €10,000 per year. This is on top of the basic €50,000 for the main applicant and €15,000 for the spouse. Details in the guide about the income requirement for permanent residence in Cyprus.
05What will happen to the child’s status after 25 years?
If a child received permanent residence as a dependent of 18-25 years old, his lifelong status remains after 25 - even if he marries or becomes financially independent. And if there is no status yet and the child is already 25, it cannot be included in the parent’s application; you need your own basis: your own investment, a separate residence permit or a student visa.
06Is it possible to include a child born after obtaining permanent residence?
Yes. A child born after the parents have received the status is added to their permanent residence on a separate application. Since he is a minor, there are no additional conditions - he needs a birth certificate with an apostille, a statement from the parents and proof of income for the new child (plus 10,000 € per year).
07How are adopted children included?
Adopted children are included under the same conditions as their own children, based on their actual age. Additionally, you need to confirm the fact of legal adoption: a court decision on adoption with an apostille and translation, plus a birth certificate, where the adoptive parents are indicated as parents.
08What to do with a disabled adult child?
If an adult child, due to disability, is permanently and lifelong dependent on his parents, he is considered as a dependent dependent regardless of age - the 25-year rule and the requirement to be a student do not apply to him. You need a medical certificate of disability and incapacity for work with an apostille and translation.
09Is the other parent's consent required?
If a minor child is registered with one parent (for example, after a divorce), as a rule, the notarized consent of the second parent is required for departure and registration of status - with an apostille and translation. If the second parent is deceased, deprived of rights or unknown, this is confirmed by relevant documents.
10What documents are needed for a child 18-25 years old?
To the basic package (birth certificate with apostille, copy of passport, photo, medical insurance) are added: a certificate from the university about full-time study, confirmation of financial dependence on the applicant and confirmation that the child is not married. The parents' additional income of 10,000 € for this child is also confirmed.
11Do children need to live in Cyprus or learn the language?
No. There are no residence or language requirements in the Cyprus permanent residence program - neither for adults nor for children. To maintain status, the whole family only needs to visit Cyprus at least once every two years. A language at level B1 is required only for citizenship, but not for permanent residence.
12Does Cyprus permanent residence permit children visa-free entry into Schengen?
By itself - no. Cyprus is a member of the EU, but as of 2026 it is not yet part of the Schengen zone, so permanent residence in Cyprus does not provide visa-free travel within Schengen. To travel to mainland Europe, children and parents need a Schengen visa. At the same time, the status of an EU resident in Cyprus remains lifelong and stable.
