Jobs in Hungary for foreigners in 2026: in-demand professions and salaries

Contents
Hungary in 2026 is one of the most accessible entry points to the EU labor market: the minimum wage has risen by 11%, IT, engineering and medicine have a chronic staff shortage, and English is enough at many international companies. We break it down piece by piece: how much is paid by industry, how much is left after taxes, which professions open the door to a work visa and a residence permit - and where the pitfalls are for a Russian.
In brief
Hungary closes its labor shortage with foreigners and keeps a low entry bar. From January 1, 2026 the minimum wage is 322,800 Ft gross, the guaranteed minimum for skilled workers is 373,200 Ft. The nationwide average is about 705-725 thousand Ft gross (~509 thousand net). The highest pay is in IT (over 1 million Ft) and engineering; doctors, nurses, engineers and IT professionals are in the shortest supply. Taxes are simple: 15% income tax plus 18.5% social contributions from the employee. Work is a legal route toa Hungary residence permitand further to citizenship.
Hungary's labor market in 2026: the key points briefly
Hungary is a country with low unemployment (about 4%) and an aging population, so employers openly compete for staff and increasingly hire foreigners. The economy rests on three pillars: the automotive and machine-building industry (Audi in Győr, Mercedes in Kecskemét, BMW in Debrecen, battery plants), the services sector and IT outsourcing in Budapest, and agriculture and tourism.
The minimum wage has been growing at double-digit rates for the third year running: the government raised it by 11% in 2026 to stop people leaving for Austria and Germany. At the same time a chronic labor shortage persists - the state approves an annual quota for bringing in workers from third countries and keeps a list of understaffed professions for which it's easiest to hire a foreigner.
- Where most of the jobs are:Budapest and its agglomeration, the industrial clusters of Győr, Kecskemét, Debrecen, Szolnok.
- Who is recruited most eagerly:engineers, IT professionals, doctors and nurses, skilled factory workers, drivers and warehouse staff in logistics.
- The main trend of 2026:growing demand in green energy, electric vehicles and battery manufacturing.
The minimum and average wage: how much that is in euros
Hungary has a two-tier minimum. The base rate (minimálbér) is for jobs with no education requirements. The guaranteed minimum (garantált bérminimum) is for positions requiring at least vocational secondary education. The exchange rate in mid-2026 is about 400 Ft to the euro.
| Indicator (2026) | Gross, Ft/month | ≈ Euro | Net, Ft/month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum (minimálbér) | 322 800 | ~810 € | ~214 700 |
| Guaranteed minimum | 373 200 | ~935 € | ~248 200 |
| Nationwide average | ~705 000-725 500 | ~1 760-1 815 € | ~509 200 |
The gross figures are official data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH). About 66.5% of gross is left as net - the rest is taken by tax and contributions (details below, in the sectionon taxes). It's important to understand: the average is pulled up significantly by Budapest and the IT sector - in the provinces and unskilled labor, real incomes are closer to the minimum.

Top in-demand professions and salaries
Below are approximate average gross salaries for the most in-demand fields of 2026. These are market medians; Budapest and international companies pay noticeably more, the provinces less.
| Profession | Gross, Ft/month | ≈ Euro/month | Demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior developer / IT architect | 1 400 000-2 200 000 | 3 500-5 500 € | very high |
| Mid-level developer, DevOps, data analyst | 900 000-1 400 000 | 2 250-3 500 € | very high |
| Engineer (industrial automation, electrical, mechanical) | 700 000-1 100 000 | 1 750-2 750 € | high |
| Specialist physician | 800 000-1 300 000 | 2 000-3 250 € | shortage |
| Nurse, physiotherapist | 450 000-650 000 | 1 125-1 625 € | shortage |
| Finance, accounting, SSC centers | 550 000-900 000 | 1 375-2 250 € | high |
| Skilled factory worker | 400 000-600 000 | 1 000-1 500 € | high |
| Driver, warehouse worker (logistics) | 380 000-520 000 | 950-1 300 € | high |
| Hotel and restaurant staff | 330 000-500 000 | 825-1 250 € | seasonal |
These professions aren't just about money: it's precisely for them that the state most readily issues work permits to foreigners and arrangesan employment-based residence permit.
IT and engineering: where pay is highest
The IT sector makes up about 12% of Hungary's GDP and is growing faster than the rest. The average salary in IT and telecoms is over 1,072,000 Ft gross a month, the country's highest-paid industry. Programmers, cybersecurity specialists, cloud and DevOps engineers, and data analysts are officially listed as in short supply.
- Junior developer:500,000-800,000 Ft - the entry threshold, but growth is fast.
- Mid-level (2-4 years of experience): 900 000-1 400 000 Ft.
- Senior (5+ years):from 1,400,000 Ft and up; strong leads at international product companies earn the equivalent of 80-110 thousand dollars a year.
Engineers are the second most in-demand group. The automotive industry and battery plants are driving demand for electrical engineers and automation and quality specialists; a 15% growth in job openings in energy and green technology is forecast by 2027. For IT professionals and engineers with English it's realistic to get a remote job or one at an international company - more in our article onresidence permits and legalization for remote workers and investors.
Medicine: a shortage that isn't closing
Healthcare is a particular pain point of Hungary's market. The population is aging, while doctors and nurses have been leaving for the West for higher pay for years. The result is a persistent shortage of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, caregivers and narrow specialists.
For a foreign medical worker there are two barriers: diploma recognition and language - you need to speak Hungarian with patients, English isn't enough. But after legalization demand is guaranteed, and specialist doctors' salaries have risen to as much as 1.3 million Ft. For nurses the entry is easier in terms of education requirements, but pay is more modest - 450-650 thousand Ft. Elderly caregiving is a mass-hiring field where basic Hungarian is enough.
- Plus:almost guaranteed employment and a path to a residence permit.
- Minus:mandatory diploma recognition and the Hungarian language for working with patients.
Manufacturing and logistics: mass hiring of foreigners
Factories are the main employer for foreigners without higher education. Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Bosch, Samsung SDI and dozens of suppliers hire line operators, welders, electricians and technicians. Here people most often work under a hiring scheme through agencies from third countries, with housing and transport provided.
- Production operator, assembler:400,000-550,000 Ft, often plus extra pay for shifts and overtime.
- Welder, electrician, technician: 500 000-700 000 Ft.
- Warehouse worker, picker: 380 000-480 000 Ft.
- Category C/E driver:450,000-600,000 Ft, more in international transport.
Real income at a factory is often above the minimum thanks to night, holiday and overtime pay. Logistics is on the rise: Hungary is an EU transit hub, and distribution centers are being built near the auto plants. Hungarian usually isn't needed for line positions - basic English or working in a Russian/Ukrainian-speaking crew is enough.

How much is left net: taxes on salary
Hungary's tax system is one of the simplest in the EU, with rates below the European average. Only two payments are withheld from an employee's salary.
| Payment | Rate | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Personal income tax (SZJA) | 15% (flat) | the employee |
| Social contribution (TB, járulék) | 18,5% | the employee |
| Employer's social tax (szocho) | 13% | the employer (on top of gross) |
In total, 33.5% of gross is withheld from the employee - meaning about 66.5% is left net. Example: with an average gross salary of 705,000 Ft the employee receives about 469,000 Ft net; at the minimum of 322,800 Ft - about 214,700 Ft.
There are also pleasant exceptions: young people under 25 are exempt from income tax up to the average salary, family tax reliefs apply, and (from 2025-2026) a phased income-tax exemption applies to mothers with children. Hungary's corporate tax is just 9%, the lowest in the EU, while VAT is 27%, the highest. A detailed breakdown of the fiscal regime is in ourHungary hub.
“The main mistake of those going to work in Hungary is looking only at the number in the offer and forgetting about the net amount and legalization. About a third of gross goes to tax and contributions, and a good contract on its own doesn't yet give the right to work: a citizen of a third country needs a single permit, and everything here depends on whether the profession is on the shortage list. My advice - choose a field where you both earn decently and are legalized without a labor-market test: IT, engineering, medicine, understaffed trades. Then work status becomes not a dead end but the first step toward permanent residence and an EU passport - and we build the case that way from the start.”
Is Hungarian needed
The main myth: that you can't get into the country without Hungarian. Reality is more flexible and depends on the field.
- IT, international SSC centers, engineering R&D:English is usually enough, Hungarian is a bonus for career growth.
- Manufacturing, warehouses, construction, logistics:the language is often not required, basic English or working in a foreign-language crew is enough.
- Medicine, the public sector, customer-facing work, law:Hungarian is mandatory, without it you won't be allowed to work with patients and clients.
- Tourism and hospitality:in Budapest and at Lake Balaton, English and German are valued, Hungarian is desirable.
Hungarian is not an easy language (Finno-Ugric group, unrelated to Russian or English), but for everyday work an A2-B1 level is enough. For simplified naturalization and citizenship the language will be needed regardless - we write about this in the breakdown ofcitizenship by roots.
How to find a job and get legalized
A citizen of a third country (including Russia) needs a work permit and a residence permit to work - in most cases they're issued as a single document (egységes engedély). The logic is simple: first an offer from a Hungarian employer, then legalization.
- Find a vacancy and get an offer.Platforms: profession.hu, cvonline.hu, jooble, LinkedIn, EURES; for factories - recruitment agencies.
- The employer initiates the permit. They confirm they didn't find a candidate on the local market (or the profession is on the shortage list - in which case a labor-market test isn't needed).
- Apply for the single work and residence permit.Processing time - approximately 1.5-3 months.
- For highly skilled workers - the EU Blue Card.Suits IT professionals, engineers, doctors; gives EU mobility and an accelerated path to permanent residence.
The work residence permit is renewable, and after several years of legal residence it opens the door to permanent residence and naturalization. A full breakdown of the requirements and timelines is in the guide toHungary's work-based residence permit. Official information on statuses is on the migration service portalOIF (oif.gov.hu).
What a Russian and any foreigner should factor in
Hungary is more lenient than many EU countries toward workers from third countries, but there are nuances that at BRIDGES GLOBAL we check in advance so the client doesn't lose time and money.
- The reality of the offer. Some agency vacancies from factories are hiring through intermediaries; we check the contract, the rate, the housing and overtime terms, so there are no hidden deductions.
- Diploma recognition. For doctors, engineers and teachers, confirming qualifications is mandatory and takes time - we budget for it in advance.
- The shortage list.If the profession is on it, legalization is simpler and without a labor-market test - we tailor the strategy to the specific specialty.
- Taxes and net income. We calculate net income accounting for reliefs (under-25s, family deductions), so the offer is compared .
- Banking and payment restrictions for Russians. We help with opening an account and legally receiving a salary.
- The residence permit-permanent residence-citizenship prospect. We structure the work from the start so that years on the work status count toward the path to permanent residence and naturalization.
Bottom line
Hungary in 2026 is a pragmatic choice for those who want to work legally in the EU without sky-high requirements. The minimum wage has risen to 322,800 Ft, the average is about 705 thousand Ft gross, and in IT and engineering incomes are quite Western European. Taxes are simple - 15% income tax and a low threshold for social contributions. The staff shortage in IT, medicine, manufacturing and logistics means a skilled professional has good chances of getting an offer, a work residence permit, and eventually - permanent residence and an EU passport.
The main thing is to build the path from the offer to legalization correctly and not fall for dubious hiring schemes. This is exactly what we take on: we select the strategy, check the employer, and manage the case through toResidence permits, and for those looking beyond just work - through toHungarian citizenship.
