How the education system works in Hungary

The Hungarian education system is divided into four levels. Preschool education - from 3 to 6 years old, attendance from 5 years old is mandatory. Primary school - 8 classes, from 6 to 14 years old. Secondary - 4 years, gymnasium or vocational school. Higher education - bachelor's, master's, doctorate.

Compulsory education lasts from 6 to 16 years of age. The state finances schools from the budget. The academic year begins on September 1 and ends in mid-June. Vacations: autumn (October), winter (December-January), spring (April).

The language of instruction in public schools is Hungarian. This is the main barrier for foreigners. A child without knowledge of the language will find himself in an environment where he does not understand a word. Schools are obliged to accept the child, but support for learning Hungarian depends on the specific institution.

Public schools: free, but in Hungarian

Children of foreigners with a residence permit have the right to study in public schools for free. This is enshrined in law. There are no additional tuition fees. Parents only pay for textbooks (about €50-100 per year) and food (€1-2 per day).

Training is entirely in Hungarian. For a 5-7 year old child this is realistic - children quickly master language through communication. For a teenager 12-14 years old, the transition is much more difficult. Learning suffers until basic vocabulary is developed.

Some public schools have bilingual programs - Hungarian plus German, English or French. Such schools are more flexible and better accept foreign students. There are about 20-25 of them in Budapest.

Registration for school is through the district municipality. Needed: a child’s residence permit document, birth certificate, medical card. They cannot refuse admission.

International schools in Budapest

For families who do not want to immediately immerse their child in the Hungarian language, there are several well-known international schools in Budapest.

American International School of Budapest (AISB) - the largest international school in the city. IB (International Baccalaureate) program, taught in English. Accepts children from 3 years old to 18 years old. Cost: €12,000-18,000 per year depending on the class. The campus is located in the Buda Highlands.

British International School Budapest - British program, age from 3 to 18 years. Cost: €10,000-16,000 per year. Issues a British certificate (GCSE, A-Levels), which is recognized in universities around the world.

International School of Budapest (ISB) - another option with the IB program. Cost from €8000 per year. Suitable for the average budget among international schools.

All three schools accept children without knowledge of Hungarian. Most of the students are the children of diplomats, top managers of international companies and investors.

German-language and other private schools

Hungary has a strong German-speaking tradition in education. There are several German private schools with a long history in Budapest.

Deutsche Schule Budapest - official German school, accredited in Germany. Training in German, cost €5000-8000 per year. The certificate is recognized by German and Austrian universities without additional exams.

Waldorf schools - Hungary is known for its Waldorf movement, several schools operate in Budapest and Debrecen. Cost €3000-6000 per year. Education is in Hungarian, but the approach is softer for foreign children.

Conditions for foreign children in Hungarian schools

A child with a residence permit has the same rights to education as a Hungarian citizen. It is illegal to deny admission to a public school. This works in practice - families from Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan regularly place their children without problems.

Language support is a weak point of public schools. There are few special integration programs. Some teachers help on their own initiative, some do not. We recommend hiring a Hungarian tutor for the first 6-12 months (€20-40 per hour).

Documents for enrollment in a public school: a child’s international passport, a residence permit of the child (or one of the parents), a birth certificate with an apostille, a medical certificate of vaccinations. Translation of documents into Hungarian is required.

Recognition of foreign grades: previous years of study are counted. A child will not be sent to first grade if he has already studied for several years. The final decision about the class is made by the school principal.

The best cities in Hungary for families with children

Budapest - the obvious choice. All international schools, the best private gymnasiums and universities are concentrated here. Developed infrastructure, metro, parks, cultural life. Minus - more expensive than in the provinces.

Debrecen - the second largest city in the country. A strong university with a medical faculty in English. Good state grammar schools, quiet and safe environment. The cost of living is 30-40% lower than Budapest. There are no international schools.

Pecs - a university city in the south of the country. Mild climate, beautiful architecture. The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pécs accepts international students. For families with school-age children - only public schools.

Eger is a small historic town popular with relocating families. Low crime, good schools. There are no international schools, but the quality of public schools is above the national average.

Higher education in Hungary

Hungary offers quality higher education by Central European standards. Diplomas are recognized in all EU countries. This is important for families who want to give their children a European education without huge expenses.

ELTE (Eotvos Lorand University) - the oldest and largest university in the country, founded in 1635. Strong faculties: law, humanities, natural sciences. Training is mainly in Hungarian, some programs are in English. Cost for foreigners: €3000-6000 per year.

BME (Budapest University of Technology and Economics) - the best technical university in the country. Engineering specialties, IT, architecture. Some programs are in English. Cost: €4000-7000 per year.

Medical faculties: a special case

Hungary is one of the largest centers of medical education in English in Europe. Every year several thousand students from North America, Scandinavia, Israel and the CIS countries come here.

The reason is simple: diploma recognition. A Hungarian medical diploma is recognized in the USA (you need to pass the USMLE), Canada, Israel and all EU countries. At the same time, the cost of training is €14,000-18,000 per year versus €40,000-60,000 in American medical schools.

The three main medical universities are Semmelweis in Budapest, the University of Debrecen and the University of Pécs. All three accept foreigners, all three have programs in English.

Entry requirements: high school diploma, grades in biology and chemistry, entrance exam or interview. Knowledge of Hungarian is not required for English-language programs.

The duration of medical education is 6 years. After graduation, you need an internship (residency), which can be completed in Hungary or another EU country.

Recognition of foreign diplomas and documents

If you are moving with children who have already studied in another country, you need to legalize their documents. The procedure depends on the country of issue of the document.

For CIS countries (Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belarus): apostille on the document plus a notarized translation into Hungarian or English. Recognition of the document through Oktatasi Hivatal (Hungarian Educational Authority).

Recognition of a school certificate for admission to a Hungarian university: an application is submitted to the university, a notarized translation of the certificate is attached. The review period is 1-3 months.

Recognition of a university degree for work: through the EKKR (Hungarian Qualifications Framework) or directly through the employer. Some professions (medicine, law, pedagogy) require additional recognition procedures.

Important: the translation must be completed by a certified translator in Hungary or officially certified in the country of issue of the document.

Hungarian language: how important it is to learn

Hungarian is one of the most difficult languages ​​for speakers of Indo-European languages. 18 cases, agglutinative structure, completely different logic. This scares many people.

Real picture: Budapest has an English-friendly environment. Young Hungarians (under 40) speak English well. In supermarkets, cafes, banks, shopping centers - speak English without any problems.

Hungarian is not compulsory for international school students. It is compulsory for children in public schools; it is the language of instruction. Most families hire a Hungarian tutor before moving or in the first months.

Basic level A2 is achieved in 6-9 months with regular classes (3-4 times a week). Children master the language environment of the school in 1-1.5 years.

Hungarian residence permit for families: how to get

Children are automatically included in the residence permit of the parent-investor. This is standard procedure. The child receives his own residence permit, which entitles him to free education at a public school.

Hungary offers Guest Investor Visa - investment residence permit for 10 years. Investment: units of a regulated real estate fund from €250,000. Minimum holding period of about 5 years.

Advantage for families: the whole family receives a residence permit for one investment. Husband, wife and children - all with rights of residence and access to services, including education.

After 8 years of continuous residence, you can apply for permanent residence. After 8 years of permanent residence - citizenship. The period is long, but education for children is already available from the first day of the residence permit.

Extracurricular life and clubs

Budapest offers a rich extra-curricular life. State music schools (Zeneiskola) are a unique Hungarian tradition. Children learn to play instruments for a nominal fee (€20-50 per month). The level of teaching is high - Hungary is famous for music pedagogy (Kodály method).

Sports sections: swimming, fencing, judo, football. In public sports schools - free of charge or for €10-30 per month. In private clubs - €50-150 per month.

Education in public schools is free. This is a direct tax benefit compared to several other European countries, where even state schools charge fees from non-residents.

Flat income tax in Hungary - 15%. This is one of the lowest rates in the EU. For families with children, tax deductions apply: €100 per month for the first child, €133 for the second, €200 for the third and each subsequent child (from the monthly tax).

VAT on educational services: public education is exempt. Private schools pay 27% VAT (the highest in the EU), but accredited institutions often have a 0% VAT exemption on education.

Practical advice before moving with children

Choose your Budapest area based on your school, not the other way around. International schools are located in certain parts of the city. Renting an apartment near the school is smart, especially in the first year.

Apply to an international school 6-12 months before moving. Popular schools have waiting lists. AISB and British International School are often full a year in advance.

Start Hungarian courses early - at least for your child. A 3-4 month base before moving will greatly facilitate adaptation to a public school.
