After obtaining PMZh and several years of residence on this basis, the right to apply for citizenship through naturalization opens. If you add up the entire path - approximately 5 years to PMZh plus the residence requirement on PMZh and consideration time - you get about ten years from the first VNZh to the passport.

Unlike the ancestry route, ordinary naturalization requires:

• passing a Bulgarian language exam at a level sufficient for communication;
• to confirm legitimate source of income and absence of legal issues;
• to meet residency requirement - real connection to the country, not merely formal registration.

This is a serious path for those who genuinely intend to live in Bulgaria: retirees, remote entrepreneurs, families relocating to the coast. If your goal is to obtain an EU passport without relocating, and you have Bulgarian roots, the ancestry route is orders of magnitude faster and simpler.

Citizenship through marriage: possible, but not quick

Marriage to a Bulgarian citizen opens a preferential, but not instantaneous, path. Marriage itself does not grant citizenship and does not dramatically reduce the residency period. Under general rules, one may apply for citizenship after several years of marriage and with permanent residency in Bulgaria.

The golden passport program, through which citizenship could be obtained for a substantial investment, was discontinued by parliament in 2022. The reason was criticism from the European Parliament and the sanctions context surrounding wealthy applicants, including from Russia.

If you are today offered to buy Bulgarian citizenship through investment—this is either outdated information or a scheme that will end in loss of funds and rejection. No legal investment citizenship program exists in Bulgaria in 2026.

What remains for an investor: investment in Bulgarian investment funds grants the right to accelerated temporary residency and then permanent residency, followed by the general naturalization path (approximately 5 years of residency plus language and income requirements). That is, investments can accelerate residency status but do not provide instant passport. calculation is more important than beautiful promises.

Seaside real estate: what it gives and what it does not

Taxes upon purchase and ownership in Bulgaria are not high, and the combination of affordable prices and the country's EU membership makes the market attractive. Simply set your expectations correctly: housing is convenience and investment, and the path to a passport lies through ancestry or naturalization.

Bulgaria's taxes: why a flat 10% is so attractive

The tax system is a separate argument in favor of Bulgaria. Personal income tax is flat 10%, one of the lowest rates in the entire European Union. Corporate tax is also 10%, VAT is 20%. For entrepreneurs and high-income individuals, this is a significant difference compared to most EU countries.

But it is critical not to confuse two different concepts. Citizenship is not tax residency. Upon obtaining a Bulgarian passport, you do not automatically become a tax resident of Bulgaria and do not begin paying its 10% on all worldwide income. This means that for real tax benefits, you need to actually relocate your center of life to Bulgaria, not simply obtain a passport. Conversely, an EU passport does not automatically create new tax obligations to Bulgaria if you do not live there.
