Moving to Hungary with kids 2026: schools, kindergartens, and adaptation
Contents

Relocating to a new country with a child isn't just about the visa and apartment, but also the question of where they'll go to kindergarten or school, what language they'll study in, and how they'll fit into a foreign environment. In Hungary, attending kindergarten is mandatory from age 3, and school education from age 6. We break down how the system works, how much private and international education costs, how to arrange a residence permit for a child, and what genuinely affects adaptation.

Kindergarten (óvoda)mandatory from age 3, min. 4 hours a day
School (általános iskola)from age 6, 8 grades of basic education
Mandatory educationfrom 3 to 16 years old
International schoolsroughly 7,000-28,000 € a year
A residence permit for the childfamily reunification, decision within up to 70 days
Family benefit (családi pótlék)roughly 13,300-13,700 Ft/month per child

In brief

In Hungary kindergarten (óvoda) is mandatory from age 3 for at least 4 hours a day, school (általános iskola) - from age 6. State education is free and in Hungarian, private and international schools (English, IB) cost roughly 7,000-28,000 € a year. Children get residence permits through family reunification. Younger children's adaptation goes easier - the language is absorbed in a year to a year and a half.

Next, step by step: how the system works, how much education will cost, how to enroll a child, what documents are needed, and what's important for parents to consider before relocating.

Hungary's education system in brief

Hungary's education system is built logically and to European standards. Mandatory education covers ages from 3 to 16 years old- this is rare even for the EU, where usually only the school stage is made mandatory.

  • Bölcsőde- nursery, up to age 3, optional.
  • Óvoda- kindergarten, mandatory from 3 to 6-7 years old.
  • Általános iskola- basic school, 8 grades (elementary + lower secondary), from age 6.
  • Gimnázium / szakgimnázium / technikum - upper secondary stage after grade 8, leads to the final exam érettségi(a diploma equivalent).

After school the road leads to universities - we wrote in detail about higher education and English-language study in the article on Hungary's residence permit and legal residence. Education is a common but not the only reason for relocation: many families see Hungary as a calm base in the center of Europe with low taxes (15% personal income tax).

The official structure of the system can be checked on the European Commission's portal Eurydice.

Kindergartens (óvoda)

The main thing that surprises relocated parents: in Hungary kindergarten isn't an optional service but an obligation. Since 2015, attending óvoda mandatory from age 3, the child must be there at least 4 hours a day. Exceptions are given only on medical or developmental grounds, upon application.

State kindergartens are free (parents pay for meals, usually at discounted rates or free for large or low-income families). Upbringing is in Hungarian, but for toddlers this is a plus - at age 3-4 the language is absorbed naturally, through play and communication.

  • State óvoda- free, at the place of residence (registration/address).
  • Private kindergarten- roughly from 100,000 Ft a month and up, often with an English or bilingual program.
  • International kindergarten- at international schools, in English, cost close to school tuition rates.

A child must be enrolled at a state kindergarten by the family's address of residence - the district kindergarten is obligated to accept children from its district, though with a shortage of spots it may refer them to a neighboring one.

Schools - state, private, and international

Basic school (általános iskola) lasts 8 grades and gives the foundation of general education. Next comes the upper stage (gymnasium or technical school) up to the final exam. Foreign parents have three main paths.

School typeLanguageCost (reference)Who it suits
StateHungarianFreeA long-term move, willingness to learn the language, a younger age
Private HungarianHungarian (often + English)~3,000-7,000 € / yearSmaller classes, extra programs, gentle integration
International (English/IB)English~7,000-28,000 € / yearTemporary relocation, English-speaking family, older children

A state school is free and mandatory by place of residence, but all instruction is in Hungarian, which for a teenager without the language is a serious barrier. International schools (for example, British and American ones in Budapest) teach in English on the British curriculum or the International Baccalaureate (IB) system, accept children of over 50 nationalities, but this is the most expensive option.

If the move is connected to an investment program, pay attention to Hungary's residence permit for investment (golden visa)- family status extends to children right away. It's useful to compare conditions with neighboring countries in the overview of the golden visas of Hungary, Greece and Portugal.

The language barrier and children's adaptation

Hungarian is a hard language, unrelated to either Russian or English. This scares parents the most. But a simple rule applies here: the younger the child, the easier the adaptation.

  • 3-6 years old (kindergarten):the language is absorbed in a year to a year and a half almost effortlessly, through the environment.
  • 7-11 years old (elementary school):adaptation takes longer, extra Hungarian classes are needed, but by the end of the year most catch up with the class.
  • 12-16 years old (teenagers):the hardest age - both language and social adaptation. Here an international school in English is often more sensible.

State schools are obligated to accept a foreign child and often organize Hungarian-language support (catch-up classes). Practical advice: if the move is long-term and the child is under 10, a state school will genuinely integrate them into the environment. If the move is for 2-3 years or the child is a teenager, an international school will save nerves for the whole family.

Cost of education

The education budget is one of the key factors when relocating. State education is free, costs start with the private segment.

Stage / typeAnnual cost (reference)
State kindergarten and schoolFree (meal payment separate)
A private kindergartenfrom ~1,200 € (from ~100,000 Ft/month)
A private Hungarian school~3 000-7 000 €
International / IB school~7 000-28 000 €

For example, at Budapest's British international school the annual fee is roughly 3.8-5.1 million forints depending on the grade (an early lump-sum payment gets a ~3.5% discount). The American international school is considered the most expensive in the country. On top of tuition come an admission fee, uniform, meals, and a bus - budget an extra 10-20%. Exact rates are published by schools on their websites and revised annually, so the figures here are a reference, not a fixed price.

How to enroll a child at kindergarten or school

Enrollment depends on the type of institution, but the general logic is this.

  1. Determine the address of residence.State kindergarten and school are assigned to the district by the family's address - the district institution is obligated to accept a child from its district.
  2. Gather documents:a birth certificate (with translation and apostille if needed), proof of address, the parents' and child's residence permit documents, a medical record/vaccinations, the child's medical insurance number (TAJ or a temporary technical ID).
  3. File the application within the set deadline.Enrollment in óvoda and 1st grade happens in specific periods (usually spring), private and international schools have their own timelines and entrance interviews/tests.
  4. Wait for the decision. With a shortage of spots at the district school, you may be referred to a neighboring district - this is normal practice.

Important: by law any child residing in Hungary for more than 3 months must attend an accredited educational institution - this is part of mandatory education from age 3 to 16. That is, enrollment can't be delayed.

Residence permit and documents for children

Children get status in Hungary through family reunification(family reunification). A minor child (including adopted) of the main applicant who has a Hungarian residence permit is entitled to a residence permit on this basis.

  • Sponsor (parent)must already have a valid Hungarian residence permit (generally having lived in the country for at least 6 months) and prove stable income.
  • Documents:proof of kinship (birth certificate), proof of means of subsistence, housing, and medical insurance.
  • Decision timeline:up to 70 days from the filing date.
  • Validity termof the child's residence permit is usually tied to the sponsoring parent's permit.

If a parent arranges status through investment, children are included in the application as family members - details in the guide on Hungary's golden visa. Families with Hungarian roots often go further - toward citizenship; we break down this path in the hub on Hungarian citizenshipand in the article on simplified naturalization by roots. Official information on the grounds can be found on the website of the migration service oif.gov.hu.

Healthcare for children

Access to state healthcare in Hungary is given by the social insurance card TAJ. It opens up doctor visits, hospital care, and prescription medicine. For a foreign child the card is arranged with a residence permit, a birth certificate, and proof of address.

For the transition period, while TAJ isn't yet arranged, the family needs private medical insurance - it's required anyway when applying for a residence permit. For school enrollment, the child's medical insurance number is enough (TAJ or a temporary technical ID issued by medics). Private pediatrics in Budapest is well developed, many doctors speak English, which relieves the language stress at first. Basic state pediatrics (vaccination, routine checkups) is handled by the district children's doctor (házi gyermekorvos) at the place of residence.

What parents should consider before relocating

At BRIDGES GLOBAL we prepare family relocations so the children's question doesn't turn into a scramble on the ground. What we check and plan for in advance:

  • Age and language.Up to age 10 - more often a state school (free + fast integration); a teenager - international (English, less stress).
  • Enrollment timelines.Enrollment in óvoda and 1st grade happens in specific windows (usually spring) - being late means a year of waiting or a paid school.
  • The child's documents in advance:a birth certificate with translation and apostille, vaccination record, medical record - we prepare these before departure, not on the ground.
  • The education budget. We realistically calculate the international school factoring in fees, uniform, meals, and the bus (plus 10-20% on top of tuition).
  • Status linkage. The child's residence permit depends on the parent's status - we synchronize renewal so there's no gap.
  • Housing and the district. The address determines the district kindergarten/school - we choose the district for the desired school, not the other way around.

We cover the path from a residence permit to citizenship for the whole family in the article on from a residence permit to Hungarian citizenship.

Expert comment

“Relocating with children always comes down not to the visa but to three questions: language, school, and timing. I tell all parents directly: if the child is under 10 and you're going for a long time, don't be afraid of a state school - in a year to a year and a half they'll speak Hungarian better than you and become one of the class. If the child is a teenager or the move is for a couple of years, take an international school in English, don't put them through the stress of a foreign language in their final grades. And most importantly - prepare documents and enrollment before departure: an apostille on the birth certificate, the vaccination record, choosing a district for a specific school. Miss the spring enrollment window and you lose a year. We handle all of this in advance, so the child's first day at kindergarten or school is a joy, not a stress for the whole family.”

Bottom line

Hungary is a convenient country for relocating with children: education in the center of Europe, mandatory (and therefore well-developed) kindergarten from age 3, free state schools, and a choice of international English-language programs. The main factor is the child's age: the younger, the easier the adaptation, and the stronger the argument in favor of a free state school.

The weak spots, : the Hungarian language is hard, and spots at state kindergartens and schools are limited and tied to the address. So relocating with children is worth planning in advance - status, documents, choosing a district and school. At BRIDGES GLOBAL we guide the family from the Hungary residence permit by investmentup to citizenship, including children's questions. A birth certificate (with translation and apostille if needed), proof of address, residence permit documents, a medical record with vaccinations, and the child's medical insurance number (TAJ or a temporary technical ID).

10How does healthcare work for children?

Access to state healthcare is given by the TAJ card - doctor visits, hospital, prescription medicine. Before it's arranged you need private insurance, which is required anyway when applying for a residence permit.

11What child benefits exist in Hungary?

A direct family benefit (családi pótlék) - roughly 13,300-13,700 Ft a month per child. Separately there's a family tax benefit, which grew from 2026 (about 20,000 Ft per child).

12Can a state school refuse admission?

The district school is obligated to accept a child from its district, but with a shortage of spots it may refer the child to a neighboring district. Any child living in the country for more than 3 months must attend school.
