01 / About the program

How the Italian nomad visa works

Italy opened this route by a decree of 29 February 2024. The main difference from work visas: the status is issued outside the annual decreto flussi quotas and requires no work permit from an Italian authority.

01

Two forms of one visa

A self-employed person is issued the nomad visa and an employee the remote worker visa. The requirements as to income, insurance and experience are the same.

02

Income from €25,500 a year

The decree requires three times the level of exemption from contributions to health costs. On the consulates’ guidance that is €8,500 multiplied by three.

03

At least six months of experience

Previous work in the same field as the one you will pursue in Italy is evidenced. Employees additionally need a contract or a binding offer.

04

No work permit is needed

The decree requires neither a nulla osta for the self-employed nor an employment authorisation for an employee — which speeds up the filing.

02 / What you get

What the status gives you

Life in Italy

The right to live in the country and to travel around Schengen for up to 90 days in every 180 with the residence permit.

Outside the quotas

The status does not depend on the annual decreto flussi quotas that ordinary work visas compete for.

The family for the same term

A spouse and minor children are reunited under article 29 and receive a permit of the same length.

The work stays the same

The clients and the employer are outside Italy: there is no need to change your work when you move.

Schools and medicine

Children go to state schools and the family gains access to the health system on residents’ terms.

A tax number straight away

The codice fiscale is issued by the questura when the permit is arranged, and the self-employed additionally obtain a partita IVA.

03 / Why people apply

Why people arrange the Italian nomad visa

Italy was long closed to remote professionals: the only way in was through the quotas. The 2024 decree removed that limit.

No need to wait for a quota

Ordinary work visas depend on quotas and filing windows. Here the application is filed at any time.

It suits freelancers and employees alike

The decree expressly describes both forms of employment — self-employment and work under a contract with a foreign company.

The family moves together

A spouse and children receive a permit on family grounds for the term of the main applicant’s permit.

Life in Europe without changing jobs

Rome, Milan, Florence, the south — you choose the city while the income keeps coming from abroad.

Clear rules

The requirements are listed in the text of the decree: income, insurance, housing, experience and a contract. There are no evaluative criteria.

A basis for a further status

The years of lawful residence count towards the qualifying period for European Union long-term residency.

04 / Travel

Where you can travel on the residence permit

A permit endorsed “nomade digitale — lavoratore da remoto” gives the right to live in Italy and travel around Schengen.

Mode 01

Italy without limits

Residence, entry and exit for the whole term of the permit.

Mode 02

Schengen, 90 days in 180

Travel around the Schengen countries without a visa — up to 90 days in every 180.

Mode 03

Work for clients abroad

The activity is carried out remotely for companies and clients outside Italy. Local employment is arranged separately.

Mode 04

The rest of the world on your own passport

You travel to third countries on your passport of citizenship: that is what sets the visa regime.

The threshold is given under the consulates’ guidance on the decree of 29 February 2024 and is updated together with the level of exemption from health costs. On top of the income come the consular fee, arranging the permit, the insurance, the housing and the support. This is a preliminary calculation, not a decision of a state authority.

10 / How it works

How the process works

STEP 1

Checking the employment and the qualifications

We go through the form of employment, the experience of the last six months and whether the requirements for highly qualified work are met.

STEP 2

The documents from the employer or the clients

A contract or a binding offer and the employer’s declaration of no convictions over the last five years.

STEP 3

Income, insurance and housing

We assemble proof of income from €25,500, a policy for the whole term of the stay and documents on housing in Italy.

STEP 4

Filing at the consulate

The application is filed for the place of residence. No nulla osta is required, so there is no stage of clearance with the authorities.

STEP 5

The questura: eight working days

Within eight working days of entry the application for the permesso di soggiorno is filed. The questura also issues the codice fiscale.

STEP 6

Renewal and taxes

The permit is renewed annually. We separately run the tax and contribution obligations: breaching them is a ground for withdrawing the status.

11 / Our role

Why people arrange the Italian nomad visa with us

The decree is new and the consulates’ practice is taking shape as it goes. Most refusals come down to the form of the employer’s documents and the evidence of experience.

01

We check the qualifications in advance

The requirement of highly qualified work refers to article 27-quater: a degree, a professional qualification or experience in IT. That is checked before filing.

02

We prepare the employer’s declaration

Without a signed declaration of no convictions over five years and a copy of the employer’s document the visa will not be issued.

03

We run the questura stage

Eight working days to file after entry is a hard deadline. We prepare the appointment and the set of documents in advance.

04

We keep the tax side in order

The permit is withdrawn where the tax and contribution rules are breached. We work the obligations out before the move, not after.

17 / Questions

Answers to common questions

The decree requires an annual income of at least three times the level of exemption from contributions to health costs. On the consulates’ guidance that is €8,500 multiplied by three — €25,500 a year. The threshold is revised together with the base level.

No. The decree expressly takes this status outside the quotas: the application is filed at any time, not in the days when the window for work visas opens.

No. The decree requires neither a nulla osta for a self-employed nomad nor an employment authorisation for an employed remote worker.

At least six months of work in the same activity you will pursue in Italy. Qualifications at the level of a highly qualified worker are also evidenced.

An employment contract or a binding offer and a signed declaration of no convictions over the last five years under article 22(5-bis) of the Consolidated Act. Without it the visa is refused.

The residence permit is issued for no more than a year and renewed annually while the conditions are met. The application is filed with the questura within eight working days of entry.

Yes. A spouse and minor children are reunited under article 29(1)(a) and (b) of the Consolidated Act and receive a permit for the term of the main applicant’s permit.

The questura issues the codice fiscale when the permit is arranged, and the self-employed obtain a partita IVA. Breaching the tax and contribution rules is a self-standing ground for withdrawing the status.

The years of lawful residence count towards the qualifying period: after five years European Union long-term residency opens up, subject to the general conditions.

There are no restrictions on citizenship. The practical difficulty is evidencing the receipts and legalising documents from a foreign employer; we go through that part before filing.
