A free PDF guide — the obligations after the documents are issued

A guide: what to do after residenceor citizenship is granted

Issuing the documents is the middle of the road. A residence permit rests on the investment, the insurance and the presence, and is checked at every renewal; citizenship has obligations of its own — the passport, the terms of the programme and disclosing your residence to the banks.

Which obligations apply depends on the programme and on your own situation. The tax consequences are settled separately, by the country of residence.

01 / The essentials first

What begins once the documents are issued

Four things that make people lose a status after they already hold it.

  1. Issuing the documents is the middle of the road, not the end

A residence permit rests on the investment, the insurance, the housing and the presence. All of it is checked at every renewal, and for every member of the family separately.

  2. The tax position changes by itself

The 183-day threshold works with no application: cross it and you are a tax resident, with every duty to declare. In Hungary the same threshold is named in the programme’s own rules (183 days).

  3. A child’s status ends with their dependence

Reaching the age limit or finishing their studies means moving to a ground of their own. That is prepared a year ahead, not at the moment renewal is refused.

  4. A second passport does not undo the duties of the first

Notifying the authorities of a second citizenship, where the law of your first country requires it, and disclosing every residence to the bank under CRS both remain compulsory.

02 / The obligations

What will have to be done from here

Choose the status you hold: the list shows the obligations, the timing of each and what missing one leads to.

Which status you hold

6 obligations after the documents are issued

The status has to be kept up

A residence permit rests on the investment and on meeting the requirements: it is checked at every renewal, and for every member of the family separately. A missed obligation does not come out at once but at the moment the status is needed.

Holding the investment
For the whole term of the status
The property or the units stay in your ownership; a sale is agreed in advance
A sale ends the ground of the status for the whole family, children included
Renewing the status
Every 2-5 years depending on the programme; in Hungary the card is issued at once for 10 years
Evidence of the investment, the policy, the housing and compliance with the requirement on presence
A missed deadline means a fresh application with fresh fees, not an automatic renewal
Presence in the country
Portugal — 7 days a year; Cyprus — a visit once every 2 years
A record of entries and exits for each member of the family separately
A shortfall comes out at renewal, and the record cannot be rebuilt after the fact
Medical insurance
Every year, for every person
A live policy at the required cover for the whole term of the status
A lapsed policy is a formal ground to refuse renewal
The tax position
From the first year
Watching the 183-day threshold and the centre of your life’s interests
Residence arises automatically and brings the duty to declare worldwide income
The status of children as they grow up
On reaching the age limit
The child moves to a ground of their own: study, work or their own investment
Without preparation the child’s status is simply not renewed

The work after the status is granted is a task of its own: the calendar of renewals, the record of days, the tax plan and adding new members of the family. We do it on the same cases we handled.

03 / Two courses

After residence, and after citizenship

Both statuses need attention, but differently: one can be lost, the other has to be looked after.

The values were checked against the official material on 11.08.2026. Only the rows for which there is no official wording are marked separately.

05 / The first year

What to do in the first year after the status is granted

The first year decides whether the renewal will be a formality or a problem.

  1. The first month: registering on the ground

The local identification number, registering the address, opening an account. Without these some of what follows is closed to you.

  2. The first three months: the tax plan

Where you are a tax resident this year, and what that means for the returns. Planned before the tax period ends, not after.

  3. The first year: the record of presence

Kept from the first entry for every member of the family: stamps, tickets, contracts. At renewal it is the only proof there is.

  4. Every year: the insurance and the payments

Renewing the policy for each person, the property tax, the utilities and the service charges on the property.

  5. Six months before renewal: gathering the documents

Evidence of the investment, certificates, the policy, the papers on presence. Certificates expire, so the schedule is built backwards from the renewal date.

  6. As the family changes

A birth, a marriage, a child coming of age — each event calls for its own step on the status.

07 / What we run

The work after the status is granted

Six lines of continuing work. They are run across the whole case rather than on separate requests.

  • The calendar of renewals

The dates for every member of the family, the filing window and the list of certificates. A missed deadline means filing afresh, not an automatic renewal.

  • The record of presence

Entries and exits recorded for every person, with the documents to support them. Kept from the first year and impossible to rebuild after the fact.

  • Tax support

Watching the residence threshold, the returns, the use of the double-tax treaties.

  • Looking after the investment

Watching the holding periods for the property or the units, agreeing an exit, re-registering where needed.

  • Changes in the family

Adding a spouse and children, moving children who come of age to a ground of their own, the papers on the relationships.

  • Passports and documents

Renewing passports, obtaining certificates of status, the apostille and translations for using the documents in other countries.

We run this work on the cases we handled ourselves, and on cases handed over by other consultants once the file has been checked.

08 / The limits

What to take into account in advance

Five things that make people lose a status or meet unexpected tax consequences.

Renewal is not automaticIt is a fresh filing with a full pack

The department checks the investment, the insurance, the housing and the presence again. In most programmes a missed filing window means losing the status, not a postponement.

Selling the investment ends the statusEven if the status is years old

The ground exists while the investment does. Leaving the property or the units is agreed in advance, along with a plan to replace the ground.

Presence is checked for each personA family is not counted as one

Every person meets the requirement separately: 7 days a year in Portugal, a visit once every 2 years in Cyprus. One person’s status will not be renewed because of their own calendar.

Tax residence is not a choiceIt arises from the fact of presence

Crossing the threshold brings the duty to declare worldwide income. The planning has to be done before the tax period ends, not on its results.

False information has no limitation periodA ground to cancel even after the passport is issued

The programmes expressly provide for withdrawing a status where the information given on application turns out to be false. That is why the file is prepared honestly from the start.

10 / Common questions

Questions about living with the status

What has to be done after a residence permit is granted?

Hold the investment, renew the insurance and the housing, meet the requirement on presence, file for renewal on time and watch your tax position. Every one of these is checked at renewal, for every member of the family.

Can the status be lost?

A residence permit, yes: by selling the investment, failing the requirement on presence or missing the renewal window. Citizenship is withdrawn only where the information given on application turns out to be false.

What happens to a child’s status when they come of age?

While the studies and the financial dependence continue, the status is renewed with the parent’s. After that a ground of their own is needed: study, work or their own investment. That is prepared in advance.

Do I have to declare a second citizenship?

If the law of your first country requires it, yes, within the time it sets. That is a matter for the law of your country of citizenship, not for the programme the second passport came from.

Does a second passport hide tax residence?

No. Banks have to disclose every citizenship and tax residence under CRS. The tax position follows actual presence and the centre of your life’s interests, not which passport you present.

When may the property be sold?

On residence programmes — only by losing the status, where the status rested on the investment. On the Caribbean programmes — once the holding period the programme sets has passed, and the citizenship remains.

How is a new member of the family added to the status?

A newborn child under a simplified procedure, a spouse by an ordinary application. On residence programmes the family is extended with no second investment; in the passport programmes it is a separate application with its own fees.

Do you run the case after the status is granted?

Yes. The calendar of renewals, the record of presence, the tax support, looking after the investment and the changes in the family are work of their own, and we do it on our own cases.
