Family reunification in Hungary in 2026: a residence permit for a spouse and children

Contents
Have you obtained a Hungary residence permit or a Hungarian passport, while your family stayed home? The law provides a direct path to legally bring your spouse and children over - through a family-reunification residence permit. We break down the 2026 facts: who can act as sponsor, who can realistically be reunited, how much you need to earn, which documents to prepare, how long the decision takes, and when the family will reach permanent residence and citizenship.
In brief
Family reunification (családegyesítés) is a separate type of Hungary residence permit for close relatives of a person who already lives in the country legally.The sponsor is a Hungarian citizen, a holder of a residence permit, permanent residence or a national card. A spouse and minor children can be brought over, and in some cases dependent parents. The sponsor confirms stable income and suitable housing, and the relationship is proven with apostilled documents. The decision takes up to 70 days, family members get the right to work and study, and after a few years reach permanent residence.
This is not a separate investment program, but a mechanism under EU Directive 2003/86/EC, which Hungary applies in its migration law. If your own status in Hungary was obtained througha residence permit by investment (Hungary's golden visa)or a work residence permit, family reunification is a logical next step.
Who can act as sponsor
The sponsor is the person the family relocates to. Under Hungarian law this can be:
- A Hungarian citizen- including one who obtained the passport throughHungarian citizenshipor simplified naturalization by roots;
- A holder of a valid Hungary residence permit- work-based, investor, business, study (with restrictions), etc.;
- A holder of permanent residence or EU long-term resident status;
- A holder of a national card or a refugee/protected person card.
An important 2026 nuance:not every residence permit grants the right to invite family.The law restricts reunification for holders of short-term and special statuses. For example, a holder of the White Card (a residence permit for remote workers), as well as a residence permit for study, volunteering, internships, seasonal work or job-seeking, generally cannot bring family over - or can only after a certain period. A minimum residence term is usually expected of the sponsor too (often from 6 months), although this requirement doesn't apply to citizens and permanent-residence holders.
If you're still choosing which status to arrange, it makes sense to factor in the family perspective right away - for example, by comparing options in our breakdown ofthe golden visas of Hungary, Greece and Portugal.
Who can be reunited
The circle of relatives allowed to be brought over is clearly defined by law. Primarily these are:
- The spouseof the sponsor. The marriage must be registered and legally valid. Registered partnerships are handled under separate rules.
- Minor childrenof the sponsor or spouse - biological, adopted, in some cases foster. Children of both spouses from previous marriages are taken into account.
In additional, more evidence-strict cases, the following are allowed:
- Dependent parentsof the sponsor or their spouse - if they are financially dependent on the sponsor and have no support in their country of residence;
- Adult children, who due to their health cannot support themselves;
- Other direct dependent relatives- given valid grounds.
The further the relationship is from the core of “spouse + minor children”, the higher the evidence bar: financial dependency, the absence of other custody, and sometimes health status must be proven. The law does not recognize polygamous ties: if the sponsor already has one spouse living there through reunification, a second spouse will not be granted a residence permit on this basis.

Requirements for the sponsor - income and housing
The state wants to be sure the family won't become a burden on the budget. So the sponsor confirms two things:stable incomeandsuitable housing.
Income.You need to show regular legal income sufficient to support the whole family without applying for social assistance. There's no single strict amount in the law - the authority looks at family composition and the subsistence minimum. In 2026 practice the benchmark is this: the sponsor's income should cover each family member's basic needs, and some consultants cite a bar of roughly 1,200-1,500 euros a month for the main applicant plus a surcharge for each dependent. The exact amount is always clarified individually - it depends on the region, housing costs and the number of people relocating.
| What is confirmed | With what |
|---|---|
| Income | An employment contract, salary certificates, tax returns, account statements |
| Housing | A title deed or a lease agreement for sufficient floor space |
| Medical insurance | A policy covering all family members in Hungary |
| Relationship | Apostilled marriage/birth certificates with translation |
Housing.The sponsor shows that the family has somewhere to live - owned or rented, with an area reasonable for the whole family. A “paper” lease with no actual residence raises questions during review.
Documents: relationship and apostille
The package splits into two parts - the sponsor's documents and the applicants' documents.
From the sponsor:a copy of the passport and the residence/permanent-residence card (or Hungarian passport), proof of income, housing documents, medical insurance for the family, completed residence-permit applications and the reunification questionnaire.
From the applicants (family members):an international passport, a photo, medical insurance, and most importantly -documents proving the relationship:
- a marriage certificate - for a spouse;
- children's birth certificates - stating the parents;
- for dependent parents - evidence of dependency and family composition;
- for adoption/guardianship - the relevant court decisions.
The key requirement:all foreign documents must be apostilled and translatedinto Hungarian or English by a sworn/certified translator. The immigration service accepts documents only in these languages. Russian, Ukrainian and Kazakh certificates without an apostille and translation will not be accepted. We covered exactly how to get an apostille and avoid a refusal over formalities in a separate article onarranging a Hungary residence permit and preparing documents. Budget several weeks for legalization - it's the bottleneck of the whole process.
Processing timelines
By law the migration authority (Igazgatóság / oif.gov.hu) must make a decision on the meritswithin 70 days of the date the application is filed.In practice the timeline can be shorter or longer - depending on how complete the package is and the authority's workload.
The general logic of the stages:
- gathering and legalizing documents (apostille, translations) - often 3-6 weeks, this is done in advance;
- filing the application - usually at the Hungarian consulate at the applicant's place of residence, or inside the country if the person is already in Hungary legally;
- review - up to 70 days;
- obtaining a D visa for entry (if the applicant is abroad) and then the residence card in Hungary.
A tip: most of the time isn't lost at the authority, but in preparing apostilles and translations. So document legalization is started in parallel, even before the final submission.
The right to work and study for those reunited
Family members through reunification have the right to work - but under one condition.The right to work arises if the residence permit is issued or renewed under the so-called single application procedure, which combines the residence permit and the work permit. In this case the spouse doesn't need to separately find a sponsoring employer and arrange a work residence permit - they can take a job as an ordinary resident.
What this gives the family in practice:
- the spouse gets a job or starts a business without a separate work residence permit;
- children attend kindergarten, school, and enroll at Hungarian universities;
- the whole family uses the healthcare system through insurance;
- time on the reunification status counts toward permanent residence and citizenship.
This is a fundamental difference from a purely “dependent” status: Hungarian reunification gives the family full integration, not just the right to be near the sponsor.

Reunification through marriage
The most common scenario is when one spouse obtains status in Hungary and the other relocates afterward. Here family reunification is closely tied to marriage as grounds for migration.
It's important to distinguish two paths:
- A family-reunification residence permit- the spouse relocates to the sponsor and lives in Hungary legally, works, and accumulates residence time.
- Citizenship by marriage- the foreign sponsor themselves, married to a Hungarian citizen, can claim accelerated naturalization: with a marriage of 3+ years (or a shared child) the mandatory residence term is reduced from 8 to 3 years, while the requirement of a Hungarian-language constitutional-basics exam remains.
So marriage works on two levels: first the foreign spouse is legalized through reunification, and then - if the other spouse is a citizen - an accelerated path to a passport opens up. We discuss the naturalization conditions in detail in the hubHungarian citizenship. Hungary recognizes dual citizenship, so there's no need to renounce a previous passport.
What we check: the risk of the marriage being deemed a sham
The most sensitive part of reunification by marriage isthe sham-marriage check.The migration service has the right to refuse or cancel the residence permit if it deems the marriage was entered into solely for status. This is not a formality: the checks are real and can be strict when there's doubt.
What the authority looks at, and what we at BRIDGES GLOBAL check in advance, before filing:
- Relationship history:when and where you met, joint photos, correspondence, trips, shared life;
- Living together:one address, shared accounts, a lease agreement or ownership in both names;
- Consistency of statements:at the interview the spouses may be questioned separately - discrepancies in simple everyday details are a red flag;
- The logic of the biographies:a big age gap, no shared language, a very quick marriage right before filing - all of this increases the inspector's scrutiny;
- Document cleanliness:the authenticity of the certificates, a correct apostille and translation, no data discrepancies.
Our task is not to “cheat the check”, but to gather evidence of a real relationship in advance and close the weak points, so a family doesn't get refused over formal suspicion. If the story has nuances (a quick marriage, different countries of residence), we say so directly and prepare a reinforced package.
“Family reunification in Hungary isn't a lottery, it's a technically transparent procedure where almost all refusals are predictable in advance. Nine out of ten problems our clients have arise in two areas: document legalization and proving the marriage is real. We start the apostille and translation on day one, in parallel with everything else - that's exactly where those who do it themselves lose weeks. And on marriage I'm always with the client: if the relationship history is short or the spouses lived in different countries, we don't hide it, we build a reinforced package - joint trips, correspondence, shared life. The sham-marriage check is real, and you need to prepare for it like an exam, not hope you'll get lucky. Then the family relocates calmly and on time.”
The path to permanent residence and citizenship
Reunification is not a dead end but the start of full immigration for the whole family. Time lived on the family residence permit counts toward the overall term.
- Permanent residence:with continuous legal residence of roughly 3 years or more you can apply for national Hungarian permanent residence; EU long-term resident status - after 5 years. The exact conditions depend on the type of status and residence history.
- Citizenship:ordinary naturalization - after 8 years of residence and a Hungarian-language constitutional-basics exam; for a spouse of a Hungarian citizen the term is reduced to 3 years given a marriage of 3+ years or a shared child.
Assess the timeline of naturalization itself realistically: after filing, review takes ~5-9 months plus another ~2 months for the presidential decree, so from application to passport it's usually ~14-18 months. We break down these timelines and pitfalls in detail in the article onthe transition from a residence permit to Hungarian citizenship.
Common mistakes
Most refusals and delays are not because of a “strict law”, but because of preventable mistakes:
- Documents without an apostille or with a “loose” translation.Hungary accepts documents only in Hungarian/English and only with correct legalization - this is reason #1 for a returned package.
- The wrong sponsor status was chosen.Trying to invite family on the White Card or a fresh study residence permit, which doesn't grant this right.
- Underestimating income and housing.Income “in an envelope” or a nominal lease without actual residence - the authority sees this.
- A weak evidence base for the marriage.No joint photos, no shared address, no relationship history - the risk of a sham-marriage check rises (see the section“What we check”).
- Data discrepancies.Different spellings of names in the passport and certificates, outdated documents.
- Filing at the last minute.No time budgeted for the apostille and translations - and departure timelines slip.
Bottom line
Family reunification is the most direct and way to bring your spouse and children to Hungary if you already have status or a passport there. The law clearly defines the circle of relatives and the requirements: stable income, suitable housing, apostilled relationship documents. The decision is made within 70 days, family members get the right to work and study, and after a few years reach permanent residence and citizenship.
The main risks lie not in the law but in the details: document legalization, choosing the right sponsor status, and proving the marriage is real. Frequently asked
Questions people ask before deciding
01Who can be a sponsor for family reunification in Hungary?
A Hungarian citizen, a holder of a valid residence permit, permanent residence, EU long-term resident status, a national card, or protected status. At the same time, a number of short-term statuses (for example, the White Card, a fresh study residence permit) do not grant the right to invite family.
02Who can be brought over through family reunification?
Primarily a spouse and minor children. In more evidence-strict cases - dependent parents, adult children unable to support themselves due to health, and other direct dependent relatives.
03How much does the sponsor need to earn?
There's no single strict amount in the law. Income must cover supporting the whole family without social assistance; the 2026 practical benchmark is around 1,200-1,500 euros for the main applicant plus a surcharge for each dependent. The exact amount is determined individually.
04Does housing need to be confirmed?
Yes. The sponsor shows housing, owned or rented, with an area reasonable for the whole family. A nominal lease without actual residence raises questions during review.
05Which relationship documents are needed, and is an apostille required?
A marriage certificate for a spouse, birth certificates for children, and for parents - proof of dependency. All foreign documents must be apostilled and translated into Hungarian or English by a certified translator.
06How long does the application take to review?
By law the decision is made within 70 days of filing. In practice time is added for the apostille, translations, issuing the D visa and the residence card - in total the process takes several months.
07Can a spouse work on this residence permit?
Yes, if the residence permit is issued or renewed under the single application procedure, which combines the residence permit and the work permit. Then a separate work residence permit isn't needed.
08Can children attend school and university?
Yes. Children on the family residence permit attend kindergarten and school, enroll at Hungarian universities, and use the healthcare system through insurance.
09How does reunification by marriage differ from citizenship by marriage?
Reunification is a residence permit for the spouse who relocates to the sponsor. Citizenship by marriage is accelerated naturalization for the foreigner themselves, married to a Hungarian citizen: with a marriage of 3+ years the residence term is reduced from 8 to 3 years.
10How is a marriage checked for being a sham?
They look at the relationship history, living together, shared accounts, consistency of statements at separate interviews, the logic of the biographies, and document authenticity. If in doubt, refusal or cancellation of the residence permit is possible.
11When can the family obtain permanent residence and citizenship?
Permanent residence - roughly from 3 years of residence (EU long-term resident status - from 5 years), citizenship - after 8 years (3 years for a citizen's spouse). Time on the family residence permit counts toward the term.
12Can a previous citizenship be kept?
Yes. Hungary allows dual citizenship, so there's no need to renounce a previous passport upon naturalization.
