A citizen of Kazakhstan can obtain Argentine citizenship by investment from $350,000, by naturalisation after two years of living in the country, or through the birth of a child in Argentina. But Kazakhstan does not allow dual citizenship: acquiring Argentine citizenship means losing Kazakh citizenship, the new citizenship must be reported within 30 calendar days and the passport surrendered, and violations carry a fine and expulsion. Below we explain how to make this choice with open eyes, when an Argentine residence permit is the better option and how the process works. Terms, costs and the procedure of the programme are on the Argentine citizenship, end to end page.

Argentine citizenship for citizens of Kazakhstan: the short version

In short: for a Kazakh citizen, Argentine citizenship is a change of citizenship, not a second passport. If keeping Kazakh citizenship matters, an Argentine residence permit is the right fit. If the family is ready for the change, the investment programme and naturalisation are both available.

For most foreigners Argentine citizenship is a second passport held alongside the first. For citizens of Kazakhstan this is not the case: the Constitution and the citizenship law do not recognise a Kazakh citizen's citizenship of another country, and acquiring one means losing Kazakh citizenship. So for a family from Kazakhstan, any decision about the Argentine programme starts with whether they are ready to change citizenship and what that means for their property, business and relatives in Kazakhstan.

For some families the answer is yes: they live outside Kazakhstan, their business operates in other countries, and a strong passport with visa-free Schengen access matters more. For others the right route is an Argentine residence permit, which gives the right to live in the country and preserves Kazakh citizenship.

Constitution and Law On Citizenship of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan Code of Administrative Offences, Argentine legislation

The comparison shows that a residence permit and citizenship do different jobs. A residence permit gives the right to live in Argentina and leaves Kazakh citizenship untouched. Citizenship gives a passport with 168 destinations without a consular visa, but requires giving up Kazakh citizenship.

What Kazakh law says

In short: a Kazakh citizen's citizenship of another state is not recognised. Acquiring one means losing Kazakh citizenship, which must be reported within 30 calendar days along with surrendering the passport and identity card.

Article 10 of the Constitution and Article 3 of the Law On Citizenship of the Republic of Kazakhstan state that a Kazakh citizen's citizenship of another state is not recognised. Article 21 of the law names acquisition of another state's citizenship as grounds for losing Kazakh citizenship. The loss is registered by the internal affairs authorities in Kazakhstan or by Foreign Ministry missions abroad.

A person who has taken foreign citizenship reports it within 30 calendar days and surrenders their Kazakh passport and identity card to the internal affairs authorities or a consulate. To register the loss, they submit an application, their Kazakh passport and a document confirming the new citizenship.

ViolationConsequence under Kazakhstan's Code of Administrative Offences
Failing to report new citizenship within 30 daysFine of 100 MCI or expulsion
Using Kazakh documents after loss of citizenshipFine of 200 MCI
The same for civil servantsFine of 300 MCI with expulsion
Expulsion5-year ban on entering Kazakhstan

Liability is set by Article 496 of the Code of Administrative Offences. The migration service identifies such cases regularly: according to official reports from 2026, in a single region alone hundreds of people had their loss of citizenship registered over six months, and violators who failed to report new citizenship were expelled with a five-year entry ban.

An Argentine residence permit instead of citizenship

In short: an Argentine residence permit does not affect Kazakh citizenship. It is granted on the basis of passive income, employment, study or family ties, and gives the right to live in Argentina and travel around the region.

For a family that wants to live in Argentina or have a back-up home in Latin America, a residence permit does the job without a change of citizenship. Rentista residence is granted on the basis of passive income from abroad - rent, dividends, interest - provided it is received in Argentina through a bank. After several years, temporary residence can be converted into permanent residence. More in our articles Argentina residence permit and Argentina permanent residence.

A residence permit does not come with an Argentine passport: the holder travels on their Kazakh one. But if the family later decides to change citizenship, the years lived in Argentina on a residence permit count towards naturalisation. This approach defers the citizenship decision until the family has seen what life in the country is like.

Entering Argentina

In short: under an agreement in force since 1 November 2014, citizens of Kazakhstan enter Argentina visa-free for up to 30 days.

The visa-free stay for Kazakh citizens is shorter than for citizens of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine: 30 days. For a trip to submit documents under the investment programme this is enough, provided the appointments are combined into a single trip. For relocation the visa-free period is too short, so the residence application is prepared before entry and in some cases a national visa is obtained through the Argentine embassy in Astana.

There are no direct flights: from Almaty and Astana you fly with a connection, usually via Istanbul, Dubai or Europe. Kazakh citizens may need a visa for a Schengen transit depending on the airport, so Turkey or the Gulf are the more common choice.

The investment programme

In short: the main applicant contributes $350,000 or buys an $800,000 bond. A spouse and children aged 18 to 25 add $100,000 each, and children under 18 add $25,000 each.

The application is reviewed by the Citizenship by Investment Programmes Agency, the security services, the financial intelligence unit and the registries provide their findings, and the migration service issues the decision. The programme has not announced any restrictions for Kazakh citizens. The checks cover the source and route of funds, country risks and reputation. The programme's legal basis is being challenged in Argentina's Supreme Court, so until there is clarity BRIDGES recommends preparing documents now and paying once the implementing regulations are in place. More in our articles the cost of Argentine citizenship and the programme's legal basis.

For a family from Kazakhstan, the order of steps after the decision matters. Once they have Argentine citizenship, each family member reports it in Kazakhstan within 30 days and surrenders their documents. If there are children in the family, the question of their Kazakh citizenship is resolved under the law's rules for minors, and it is worked through before the application.

Ask a lawyer

Want Argentine citizenship with a Kazakh passport? We will help

Describe your situation briefly and we will tell you where to start.

Property and business in Kazakhstan

In short: after changing citizenship a person still owns their property in Kazakhstan, but becomes a foreigner: the rules on land ownership, entry, taxes and banking all change.

Foreigners in Kazakhstan own apartments and stakes in companies, but some types of property, such as agricultural land, are restricted. Banks reclassify the client as a foreigner, and tax residence is determined by where the person lives. An Argentine citizen can enter Kazakhstan visa-free for up to 30 days; long-term residence requires a permit.

So before changing citizenship the family reviews its assets in Kazakhstan: land, company stakes, licences, accounts and contracts. Some issues are dealt with in advance: re-registering land, the ownership structure of the business, powers of attorney. This is work for a Kazakh lawyer, and BRIDGES builds it into the plan if the family chooses Argentine citizenship.

Funds and the payment route

In short: Kazakh banks process international transfers, and the programme payment can be made from an account in Kazakhstan. The source of funds is supported by documents.

Unlike citizens of Russia and Belarus, Kazakh citizens usually have no difficulty making international transfers from their own country. The bank sending the payment to Argentina checks the sender and the source of funds: income from employment and business, property sales, dividends. The history of the money is supported by statements, contracts and tax documents. More in our article opening a bank account in Argentina.

Documents from Kazakhstan

In short: birth and marriage certificates, a criminal record certificate and documents on funds. The documents are apostilled in Kazakhstan and translated into Spanish by an Argentine sworn translator.

Kazakhstan and Argentina are both parties to the Hague Convention, so Kazakh documents are apostilled in Kazakhstan. The criminal record certificate is obtained through the e-government portal, and the apostille is affixed by the authorised bodies. Documents issued in other former Soviet republics are apostilled where they were issued. The Latin spelling of the surname is checked against the international passport before translation.

What an Argentine passport gives you

In short: according to the BRIDGES index, an Argentine passport opens 168 destinations without a consular visa, including Schengen, the United Kingdom with an ETA and Japan, plus the right to live and work in Mercosur countries.

For a Kazakh citizen who needs visas for Schengen and the United Kingdom, an Argentine passport removes the visa question for Europe. An Argentine citizen enters Kazakhstan visa-free for 30 days, as a foreigner. More in our article what Argentine citizenship gives you.

Fine for concealing a second citizenshipin monthly calculation indices (MCI)

A repeat violation can also lead to expulsion with a 5-year entry ban.

Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Administrative Offences

Giving birth in Argentina

In short: a child born in Argentina is an Argentine citizen from birth. For a Kazakh citizen this raises the question of the child's dual citizenship, which is resolved under Kazakh law.

A child born in Argentina to Kazakh citizens acquires Argentine citizenship by birth. Kazakhstan does not recognise dual citizenship, so parents need to work out in advance how to register the child's citizenship and which decisions will be required when the child comes of age. More on giving birth in our article giving birth in Argentina and the child's citizenship.

Taxes

In short: an Argentine passport does not make its holder an Argentine tax resident while they live abroad. In Kazakhstan, tax residence is determined by living in the country for 183 days or more within 12 months.

Argentina does not tax a citizen who has permanent status in another country or lives outside Argentina for 12 consecutive months. Kazakhstan treats as a tax resident anyone who has spent 183 days or more in the country within 12 months, or whose centre of vital interests is in Kazakhstan. A change of citizenship does not in itself change residence: if a person keeps living in Kazakhstan as a foreigner, they remain a Kazakh tax resident. More in our article taxes in Argentina.

How BRIDGES works with families from Kazakhstan

In short: BRIDGES starts with the choice between citizenship and a residence permit, then prepares the documents, the assets in Kazakhstan and the payment route.

The first meeting with a family from Kazakhstan is about consequences rather than the programme: what will happen to their citizenship, property, business and children. If the family chooses a residence permit, BRIDGES prepares residence in Argentina or another country. If they choose citizenship, we prepare the documents, the payment route, the application and a single trip to Buenos Aires, then remind the family of the notification deadline in Kazakhstan and help prepare the application to register the loss of citizenship. Our scope of services and way of working are set out on the Argentine citizenship with BRIDGES page.

Other options for citizens of Kazakhstan

In short: Caribbean programmes, Vanuatu, Turkey and European residence permits are open to Kazakh citizens. But for a Kazakh citizen any second citizenship means losing Kazakh citizenship.

The dual citizenship rule is the same for every country: obtaining a passport of Vanuatu, Turkey or a Caribbean state also leads to the loss of Kazakh citizenship. If keeping Kazakh citizenship matters to the family, residence permits are the answer: the Greek Golden Visa, an Argentine residence permit, residence in the UAE. Comparisons in our articles Argentine passport or Greek Golden Visa and Argentina or the Caribbean.

Where citizens of Kazakhstan go wrong

In short: they treat Argentine citizenship as a second passport, fail to report it within 30 days and keep using their Kazakh documents.

  1. They treat the Argentine passport as a second one. For a Kazakh citizen it is a change of citizenship.
  2. They do not report the new citizenship. The deadline is 30 calendar days, otherwise a fine or expulsion.
  3. They use a Kazakh passport after losing citizenship. Fine of 200 MCI.
  4. They do not prepare their assets in Kazakhstan. Land, company stakes and licences need decisions before the change of citizenship.
  5. They count on 90 days visa-free. For Kazakh citizens it is 30 days.

What to check before deciding

In short: whether the family is ready to change citizenship, whether a residence permit would do, what will happen to assets in Kazakhstan and how the notification and surrender of documents will be handled.

  • Whether the family is ready to exchange Kazakh citizenship for Argentine.
  • Whether an Argentine or other residence permit would solve the task.
  • Which assets in Kazakhstan need decisions before the change of citizenship.
  • How to handle the children's citizenship.
  • How much the programme costs for your family: a cost estimate.
