Preliminary information is not a guarantee of approval. The permit is issued within the annual quota, at the authority’s decision.
01 / The essentials first
What to know before you file
Four things that decide the chances of getting the permit.
- The employer files the application
The specialist does not file: the Swiss company does, and it is the company that explains why this particular person is needed.
- The local market comes first
The employer has to show that it looked for a candidate in Switzerland and the EU and found none. Without that step no permit is issued.
- No money has to be invested
The ground is your qualifications and an employment contract. This is the one route into Switzerland that requires neither capital nor a fixed tax.
- A salary at the market rate
The terms of work and the pay have to match the local ones. A foreigner’s salary cannot be pitched low — that is checked before the permit is issued.
02 / The costs
What the move will cost
The programme requires no investment: we count the fees, the paperwork and settling in for your family.
03 / Two scenarios
Employment with a company, or a transfer within a group
The ground is the same, but the checks and the limits differ.
The values were checked against the official material on 12.08.2026. Only the rows for which there is no official wording are marked separately.

05 / The order of work
How the process runs
It all starts with the offer: without an employer there is no case.
- Assessing the profile
The education, the experience, the industry and how sought-after it is. It becomes clear at once whether the hire can be justified to the authority.
- The employer and the contract
An offer from a Swiss company with a salary at the market rate. The contract is the foundation of the whole case.
- Justifying the hire
The employer documents the search for a candidate in Switzerland and the EU and explains why this particular specialist is needed.
- The cantonal decision
The labour office checks the terms and the qualifications, and the case then goes for federal approval within the quota.
- The visa and the entry
Once approved a D visa is issued, the specialist enters and registers with the commune.
- The card and the renewals
A category B permit runs for as long as the contract does, and is renewed. The whole process takes 2-4 months.
07 / The check
What is examined in the case
The authority looks at the specialist and at the employer alike: justifying the hire is half the case.
- Qualifications
The degree, the experience and evidence that the profile is a rare one. The authority checks what is claimed against the documents.
- The employer’s justification
The advertisement, the responses and the reasons for turning down local candidates are all part of the case.
- The terms of the contract
The salary, the hours and the social contributions are set against local practice in the industry and the canton.
- The family and the housing
For family reunion the income, housing of sufficient size and insurance are examined.
The weak point of most cases is not the qualifications but the employer’s documents on the search for a candidate in Switzerland and the EU.
08 / The limits
What to take into account in advance
Five limits that bear on the grant of the permit and on keeping it.
Without an employer there is no routeYou cannot file on your own
The permit is tied to a particular company and post. Looking for work «on the spot» is not possible on this ground.
The quota limits itFor nationals of countries outside the EU
The number of permits in a year is finite and allotted among the cantons: once it is used up the decision is put off.
The status rests on the contractDismissal changes your position
On a change of employer the permit is reissued, and if you lose the job your time in the country is limited.
Moving canton is not freeApproval is required
Moving to another canton and taking a different post are arranged separately.
The bar on the profile is highA rare qualification is needed
The authority admits specialists the Swiss and EU market cannot supply: an ordinary profile is hard to justify.
09 / Your team
Who runs your case
The work is led by specialists who deal with the cantonal labour and migration offices.

10 / Common questions
Questions about the specialist’s permit
Does any money have to be invested?
No. The ground is your qualifications and an employment contract. Neither capital nor a fixed tax is required.
May I file on my own?
No. The Swiss employer files the application and justifies the need to hire you in particular.
What is the priority of the local market?
The employer has to prove that it looked for a candidate in Switzerland and the EU countries and found none suitable. It is a required part of the case.
How does the quota work?
The annual number of permits for nationals of countries outside the EU and EFTA is capped and allotted among the cantons. The timings depend on what is left of it.
What about the salary?
It has to match the local level in the industry and the canton. Pay pitched below it is a ground for refusal.
Does the family come too?
Yes, a spouse and minor children join on family reunion, given sufficient income, housing and insurance.
What happens if I am dismissed?
The permit is tied to the contract: changing employer calls for it to be reissued, and if you lose the job your time in the country is limited.
What comes next?
The permit is renewed along with the contract. After 10 years of residence the permanent C permit opens.
