Where they started
The family operated a successful business in South Africa but watched rand exchange rate charts with understandable concern: over the years the currency had weakened significantly against the euro and dollar, and holding all savings in it meant losing value slowly. This was not panic, but rational calculation—it was time to transfer part of the capital into hard currency and a stable jurisdiction.
Why the standard route did not work
In parallel, they were thinking about their children's future: European education, freedom of movement, a backup plan in case conditions at home became uncomfortable. They did not need urgent evacuation—they needed a calm, carefully prepared foundation.
What BRIDGES had to solve
Portugal's Golden Visa through an investment fund closed both objectives with one solution. A subscription of 500,000 euros minimum to a CMVM-regulated fund—this is capital transfer into a euro asset, while the visa status itself gave the family EU residence with minimal presence requirements and a pathway to citizenship.
Why a standard answer would not do
They came to BRIDGES to ensure the move was executed properly: lawful capital export from South Africa, selection of a reliable fund, and Residence Permit processing for all four family members without unnecessary complications.
The rand was losing value, and we feared for our savings. Yan moved the capital into a euro fund, and the family received Portuguese residence.
