How an entrepreneur opened a Kazakhbank account in a single trip to Almaty

Yerzhan flew in for three days confident he would fit an account opening between meetings. By the evening of the first day it turned out that without an IIN the bank will not even start the conversation, obtaining the number takes time, and since April 2025 accounts for non-residents are opened only in person and after enhanced review. We rebuilt the schedule of his trip so that everything closed within three days - and it did.

Client story

How the situation developed

Where they started

Yerzhan runs a logistics business: some of his partners and contractors are in Kazakhstan and settlements are constant. Running them through intermediaries had become inconvenient and expensive, so he decided to open a personal account in Almaty and a corporate one later. He planned the trip around meetings: three days, a tight schedule, the bank squeezed in between.

Day one: a stop

At the branch the conversation ended on the first question: do you have an IIN? The individual identification number is a mandatory condition for a non-resident; without it the bank will neither open an account nor accept documents. It is obtained separately from the bank and takes its own time. Yerzhan was not prepared for that - in his mind an account was opened on a passport.

The second surprise

It then emerged that since April 2025 banks in Kazakhstan open accounts for non-residents only in person and after an enhanced compliance review. The remote arrangements his acquaintances had described had closed by then. Add a local phone number: without a Kazakh SIM card transaction confirmation does not work, and neither does the bank’s app.

What we did that same evening

We stepped in the same day. We rebuilt the schedule: the next morning for obtaining the IIN, the day for preparing the pack to the specific branch’s requirements, the evening for a local SIM. On the third day, a scheduled bank visit at a set hour. Yerzhan’s meetings were moved to early morning and late evening so the daytime stayed free for procedures.

How the bank was chosen

Among the systemic banks we picked the one whose practice with non-residents was the most predictable at that point: a clear document list and a well-practised procedure at a specific branch. The second candidate dropped out because it required proof of an employment link with Kazakhstan, which Yerzhan did not have as an entrepreneur from a neighbouring country. The third worked only with clients holding local registration.

What we showed the bank

The file was built around economic logic: why a citizen of Kyrgyzstan needs an account in Kazakhstan. We showed contracts with Kazakh contractors, the history of settlements, his stake in the logistics company as the source of funds, and a plan of future operations - currencies, frequency, range of amounts. For the bank the picture came together: this is not an account just in case but a tool for specific settlements.

I thought I would walk into a bank with my passport for half an hour. By the evening of the first day I realised I would not open an account at all - and called BRIDGES. In the two days left we did what I had budgeted half an hour for: the number, the documents, the SIM, the visit. I flew home with a card.

What was at stake

The price of a failed trip is another trip

If you do not fit everything into the days you are in the country, the whole process moves to your next visit - with flights, hotels and all your settlements pushed back.

Since April 2025 remote scenarios in Kazakhstan have effectively closed: whatever is not done during the trip waits for the next one.

  1. 01A repeat trip to Almaty with all its costs and lost time
  2. 02Continuing to settle through intermediaries with unnecessary fees
  3. 03A postponed corporate account, which follows the personal one
  4. 04The risk of filing unprepared documents, being refused and damaging the client history

Three days by the hour

How it all fitted into one trip

The chart is built from the facts of this matter and shows the logic of the work without decorative or unverified data.

Days in the country3
Trips1
Refusals0
  1. Stage 1

Day one, evening: the schedule rebuilt around the procedures rather than the meetings.

  2. Stage 2

Day two, morning: the IIN obtained; daytime: the document pack prepared to branch requirements.

  3. Stage 3

Day two, evening: a local SIM card arranged for transaction confirmation.

  4. Stage 4

Day three: a scheduled visit to the chosen branch at a set hour.

  5. Stage 5

The file presented: contracts, settlement history, company stake and planned operations.

Takeaway. The trip has to be planned around the procedures: if even one element is missing, the days in the country are wasted.

The file for the bank

How we explained an account in another country

The work was split into verifiable stages so that every conclusion rested on documents.

  1. 01

    Stage 1

The individual identification number - without it the bank does not accept documents. Obtained on the very first morning.

  2. 02

    Stage 2

Contracts with Kazakh contractors and the history of settlements - the account is explained by real operations.

  3. 03

    Stage 3

The stake in the logistics company: corporate documents, accounts and evidence of income.

  4. 04

    Stage 4

Currencies, expected frequency and range of amounts - the bank knows in advance what it will see on the account.

  5. 05

    Stage 5

A SIM card for transaction confirmation: without it the account is open but cannot be managed remotely.

How the work went

From first call to result

  1. 01The individual identification number
  2. 02Contracts with Kazakh contractors and the history of settlements
  3. 03The stake in the logistics company
  4. 04Currencies, expected frequency and range of amounts
  5. 05A SIM card for transaction confirmation
  6. 06Stage 6

The sequence and timing reflect this particular matter and depend on how complete the documents are and on decisions of the competent authorities.

Expert comment

Kazakhstan has become stricter over the past two years: personal presence and enhanced review are now mandatory, and there are practically no remote workarounds left. For a client that means one thing - the trip has to be planned around the procedures. The IIN, the documents, a local number, a scheduled visit: if even one element is missing, the trip is wasted. We work with exactly that logistics, not only with paperwork.

Practical takeaway

What matters in a similar situation

  • In Kazakhstan the IIN is not a formality but an entry ticket: without the number a bank will not accept your documents.
  • Since April 2025 non-resident accounts are opened in person and after enhanced review - the trip is planned around the procedures.
  • A local SIM card is needed not for calls but for transaction confirmation: without it the account cannot be managed remotely.

FAQ

Questions people ask in a similar situation

01Can you open an account in Kazakhstan without an IIN?

No, for a non-resident it is a mandatory condition. Obtaining it takes at least a day and is done separately from the bank - we build it into the trip plan.

02Is it realistic to open a Kazakh account remotely?

Since April 2025 banks open non-resident accounts only in person and after an enhanced compliance review. The remote arrangements that used to work have effectively closed.

03How many days should you allow for the trip?

A practical guide is three full working days: the IIN, document preparation, a SIM card and the bank visit. With the IIN already in hand, two are enough.

04Do you need a Kazakh phone number?

Yes, for transaction confirmation and for the app to work. It is arranged on arrival day and is part of the project coordination.

05Is an employment contract with a local employer required?

Not at every bank: for some institutions it is a matter of practice, while others accept a clear economic connection - contracts with local counterparties, a business, property. The bank is matched to the client’s situation.

International Tax Consultant, BRIDGES

I lead the international tax practice at BRIDGES and work at the intersection of tax residence, cross-border reporting and banking compliance. I assess how citizenship, residence, relocation or a new ownership structure may affect the client's tax obligations, banking profile and capital.

My work covers tax residence, CRS and FATCA requirements, source of funds and the questions a bank may raise. These elements should be considered together, because inconsistencies between documents, declarations and the underlying circumstances can create risks after a status has been obtained or an account has been opened.

During the consultation, you will receive an assessment of the tax and banking implications of the proposed decision. Where further work is required, I determine the financial documentation and personally oversee the tax and compliance aspects of the BRIDGES project.
