In plain words

The right of abode is a status giving the full right to live in the United Kingdom free of any immigration control. Its holder can enter, live and work in the country with no time limit, no visa and no conditions — the “freest” of immigration statuses, as close as possible to the rights of a citizen.

All British citizens have the right of abode automatically. In addition, under certain conditions some citizens of Commonwealth countries have it — through a parent born in the United Kingdom, for example. For them the right of abode is confirmed by a special endorsement in the passport (a certificate of entitlement), which proves the status at the border.

It is important to distinguish the right of abode from ILR: ILR is permission to remain that can be lost (through a long absence, for example), whereas the right of abode is a more fundamental status with no immigration conditions. It is a narrow category tied to citizenship and descent. We help work out whether you have such a right through your roots, and confirm it.
