Since 16 October 2026 the Bitget crypto exchange has listed Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan among the countries whose residents it does not serve. Some clients have been given a deadline in their notices: close positions and withdraw assets by 10:00 Moscow time on 21 October. For anyone using crypto to prove the source of funds for a residence permit or citizenship, the main risk is not the coins themselves but the transaction history: once access is closed it becomes harder to obtain. Here is what to do in the coming days.

In short

  • The Bitget Terms of Use of 16 October 2026 include Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in the list of countries where the service does not operate.
  • According to client notices, new trades are not accepted from 18 October, positions must be closed and assets withdrawn by 10:00 Moscow time on 21 October, after which the exchange closes the rest and restricts account access.
  • Deadlines differ between clients. Rely on the date in the notice in your account, not on emails and links from third parties.
  • On 12 October the Bank of Russia confirmed that crypto cannot be moved from a Russian digital depository to your own wallet, and direct deals between individuals are allowed until 1 July 2027.
  • For a source of funds check, the most important thing now is to download the full transaction history from the exchange while access is open.

What Bitget has done

Bitget updated its Terms of Use on 16 October 2026. Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan joined the list of prohibited countries along with a number of other states. Residents of these countries cannot open accounts or use the service. The terms also allow the exchange to restrict withdrawals, close positions by force and, in some cases, convert a client's assets into another cryptocurrency. Bypassing the restrictions with a VPN is expressly prohibited.

The shutdown runs in stages. According to the notices clients received, new orders and staking stopped at 10:00 Moscow time on 18 October. Positions must be closed and assets withdrawn by 10:00 on 21 October. After that the exchange closes the remaining positions itself and, on the evening of 21 October, starts restricting account access. Any balance left after the restriction has to be requested through customer support.

What this means for you. If you have a Bitget account and live in Russia, Belarus or Kazakhstan, open the notices in the app or on the exchange website and check your deadline. It may differ from 21 October.

The dates that matter for clients from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan

The Bitget changes coincided with the Bank of Russia's clarifications on digital depositories, so several deadlines converged in October. It helps to keep them in view as a single timeline: from the regulator's clarification to the last day on which direct crypto deals between individuals are allowed in Russia.

Deadlines in October 2026 and beyondBitget and the Bank of Russia
  1. 12 October 2026Bank of Russia: crypto cannot be withdrawn from a Russian digital depository to your own wallet.
  2. 16 October 2026Bitget updated its user agreement: Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan are on the list of countries it does not serve.
  3. 18 October, 10:00 Moscow timeNew orders and staking stopped, according to notices sent to clients.
  4. 21 October, 10:00 Moscow timeThe last moment to close positions and withdraw assets yourself.
  5. 21 October, eveningThe exchange closes the remaining positions and starts restricting account access.
  6. 1 July 2027End of the period during which direct crypto deals between individuals are allowed in Russia.

Deadlines differ between clients: rely on the notice in your account.

Bitget user agreement of 16.10.2026; notices to clients; Bank of Russia, 12.10.2026

The hardest dates are 18 and 21 October. After 18 October new orders are not accepted, so positions can no longer be moved into other coins on the exchange itself: all that is left is to close them and withdraw the assets. After 21 October the initiative passes to the exchange: it will close the positions itself and restrict access, and the balance can then only be recovered through support.

The date of 1 July 2027 concerns not Bitget but Russian regulation. Until then direct deals between individuals are allowed; after it this channel closes. For a foreign source of funds check this channel is weak even now: a bank cannot link money from private individuals to your profit on the exchange.

What this means for you. Mark your own deadline from the Bitget notice in your calendar and make the exports a day before it, not in the last hour.

Why this matters for residence and citizenship

Residence and citizenship by investment programmes check not only the amount but also the path of the money. If the capital was earned in crypto, the bank, the developer and the government body ask to see the whole chain: where the money on the exchange came from, which trades produced the profit, when and where the coins were withdrawn and where they were exchanged for money. A gap in any link means extra requests and sometimes a refusal.

The exchange is the main link in this chain. Its statements show purchases, sales and withdrawals with dates and amounts. While the account is open, you can download a statement yourself in a few minutes. Once access is restricted you will have to write to support and wait, and the format of the reply may not suit the bank.

What this means for you. Your transaction history on Bitget now matters more than the coins on the exchange. A balance can be recovered later through support, while a full statement becomes harder to get.

What to download before access closes

DocumentWhat it proves
Account verification confirmationthat the account belongs to you
Deposit history in money and cryptowhere the funds on the exchange came from
Full trade historyhow the profit arose
Withdrawal history with transaction hasheswhere the coins went and that the wallet is yours
Balance statement on the withdrawal datewhat amount left the exchange
Notice of service terminationthat the account was closed not by your decision

Download the files in every format the exchange offers and keep them outside the account. Take dated screenshots of the account page. Keep the notice of service termination too: it explains to the bank why the funds left the exchange urgently and in one amount.

Where to withdraw and what to avoid

It is better to withdraw to your own wallet or to an account with a licensed provider in the country where you plan to obtain status. Every transfer should go between addresses you can prove are yours. The chain then stays intact: the exchange, your wallet, a licensed exchange service, a bank account.

The most common mistake in such a rush is selling coins via P2P to unknown buyers. In Russia such deals are still legal: the Bank of Russia confirmed that direct deals between individuals are allowed until 1 July 2027. But to a foreign bank, money from dozens of random people looks like a break in the chain, and proving it is your profit from the exchange is almost impossible.

The second risk is a Russian digital depository. The Bank of Russia has explained that crypto cannot be transferred from there to your own non-custodial wallet, and transfers to another individual via depository addresses are prohibited. The only way out is to the address of a foreign organisation permitted to do this in its country. See our review of the P2P ban from 1 July 2027. If you need the coins abroad, do not put them into a depository.

Let's review your crypto situation

Tell us where your coins are held and which programme needs the source of funds. We will suggest which statements to download now and how to withdraw without breaking the chain.

Transfers from a personal wallet in the EU: the EUR 1,000 rule

Since 30 December 2024 the EU has applied rules under which crypto transfers carry information on the sender and the recipient, just like bank payments. For personal wallets that the client controls, there is a separate requirement: if a transfer exceeds EUR 1,000, the licensed provider must verify that the wallet really belongs to the client or is under the client's control.

Under the European Banking Authority guidelines the provider uses at least one verification method: a small test transfer of an amount the provider sets, or a message signed with the key of that wallet. If one method is not enough, they are combined. Once the provider is satisfied that the address is yours, it records this and may not repeat the check for later transfers from the same address.

For you this leads to a simple rule: withdraw from Bitget to one or two wallets you control yourself and do not change addresses without need. Then, when you sell through a provider in the EU, the check will be quick and the transfer history will stay short and clear. The euro value is calculated at the coin's rate at the time of the transfer, regardless of fees.

What this means for you. Keep access to the keys of the wallet you withdraw to. That is the wallet you will have to sign a message or make a test transfer from.

Each link is proven by a separate document. A blockchain wallet screening report settles the question of where the coins came from.

BRIDGES, source of funds practice, October 2026

For EU programmes and banks in the UAE this set is often supplemented by a blockchain wallet screening report. It shows that the coins did not pass through addresses linked to sanctions or fraud. Such a report is ordered from a specialised provider, and it is best done before the sale, while the coins sit on one address.

If the profit was made long ago and statements for the early years are missing, indirect documents help: bank transfers to the exchange, tax returns, letters from the exchange. We gather them into one file and describe the chain in words, so the reviewer sees it as a whole rather than a pile of documents. This is how source of funds verification for a bank and a programme works.

Where crypto is accepted as a source of funds

Many programmes accept crypto as the origin of capital, but almost everywhere the investment itself is paid in ordinary money through a bank. For Cyprus permanent residence the funds are transferred to a Cypriot account, and the bank checks their origin before crediting them. Vanuatu citizenship considers crypto income with a full set of trade documents. The UAE golden visa is obtained through property, and some Dubai developers accept payment in crypto through licensed intermediaries.

The general rule is simple: the fuller the exchange history, the shorter the check. Bitget leaving clients from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan makes this question urgent.

How to choose a provider to convert crypto into money

In the EU the transitional period for crypto providers ended on 1 July 2026. Since then only a company authorised under the EU regulation on markets in crypto-assets may serve clients in the Union. A provider can be checked in the register of the European Securities and Markets Authority: clients of unauthorised firms do not get the protection the regulation provides, including protection of their assets.

Companies established outside the EU may not offer these services to clients in the Union. If you exchange coins in Dubai, look for a licence from the local virtual assets regulator. For a source of funds check it matters that the provider issues a transaction report in your name: date, amount, rate, sending address and receiving account.

Taxes in your new country of residence also depend on how the sale is documented. How crypto is taxed in the Emirates and in Cyprus is covered in our articles on crypto tax in the UAE and on crypto tax in Cyprus. If capital held in coins has to become money in an account for an investment, this stage is covered by digital assets banking and compliance.

What this means for you. A provider without authorisation in your bank's country is a weak link in the chain, even if its rate is better.

What to do before 21 October

  1. Open the notices in the Bitget app or website and check your deadline. Do not follow links from emails and messages sent by third parties.
  2. Download the history of deposits, trades and withdrawals for the whole period, and the verification confirmation.
  3. Close positions yourself so that the exchange does not do it by force at an unfavourable price.
  4. Withdraw assets to a wallet you can prove is yours, or to an account with a licensed provider.
  5. Do not sell everything via P2P to strangers, and do not put coins into a Russian depository if you need them abroad.
  6. Keep the exchange notice of service termination.
File

We will build your source of funds file

We will check the exchange and wallet statements and prepare a description of the chain for the bank and the residence or citizenship programme.

What the bank will ask when the money arrives

The bank that receives the proceeds of a coin sale asks the same questions every time. How you earned the capital invested in crypto, when and with what money you bought the coins, why the funds left the exchange and why the sale happened now. The last question is answered by the Bitget notice of service termination, so keep it as a file, not only in the app.

The answers are set out in a letter with attachments: exchange statements, withdrawal history with hashes, the provider's sale report, and bank statements for the original deposits. If many years have passed between buying the coins and today, add tax returns or income certificates for that period. The bank needs to see that the amount going in and the amount coming out are linked by a clear story.

Such a letter is best prepared once and used everywhere: for the bank, the developer and the programme authority. We put it together in a banking dossier along with the other source of funds documents.

Conclusion

Bitget leaving does not take the coins away from clients, but it can leave them without documents. Anyone using crypto to prove the source of funds for residence or citizenship should spend the coming days downloading the transaction history and withdrawing to addresses they can prove. The exchange closure then remains an episode in the chain rather than a break in it.

How this piece was prepared

This piece is based on the Bitget Terms of Use as revised on 16 October 2026, the exchange notices to clients on the staged shutdown, and the Bank of Russia answers on digital currencies at cbr.ru of 12 October 2026. Deadlines differ between clients, so check your date in your exchange account.

Frequently asked

Questions people ask before deciding

01When does Bitget stop serving clients from Russia?

The Terms of Use of 16 October 2026 list Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan as prohibited countries. According to client notices, new trades are not accepted from 18 October, and positions must be closed and assets withdrawn by 10:00 Moscow time on 21 October. Deadlines differ, and the exact date is shown in the notice in your account.

02What happens if I do not withdraw funds by the deadline?

The exchange closes the remaining positions by force and restricts account access. The balance then has to be requested through support, and you can no longer download the transaction history yourself.

03Can crypto be used to prove the source of funds for residence?

Yes, many programmes and banks accept crypto income as the origin of capital. A full chain is needed: exchange deposit, trades, withdrawal to your wallet, exchange through a licensed provider and credit to a bank. Each link is proven by a document.

04Which statements should I download from Bitget before access closes?

The verification confirmation, the history of deposits, all trades and withdrawals with transaction hashes, a balance statement on the withdrawal date and the exchange notice of service termination. Keep them outside the account.

05Can I sell crypto via P2P before relocating?

In Russia direct deals between individuals are allowed until 1 July 2027. But to a foreign bank, money from many random buyers looks like a break in the chain. For a source of funds check, a sale through a licensed provider is more reliable.

06Can crypto be withdrawn from a Russian depository to my own wallet?

No. On 12 October 2026 the Bank of Russia explained that such a transfer is not permitted. Coins can leave a depository only to the address of a foreign organisation permitted to do this in its country.
